Veterans Day

Re-issue of a Veteran’s Day post.  Right after Barack Obama’s re-election in 2012 I titled this post..Most Embarrassing Veterans Day ever…

Let me edit it a bit and post it again, and may we all hope for better outcomes next year.  But I can’t help but wonder if Veterans Day came before the national election, would it change the outcome?

PTSD, A different way to treat it.

And story…

Service dog :Honor

CLYDE, N.C. (AP) — Part of the Labrador retriever’s training was to sense when the demons of war had invaded Wade Baker’s dreams.

“I was having a nightmare, a flashback,” Baker, a Gulf War veteran, once told an interviewer. “And I woke up with Honor standing on my chest, licking my face.”

He tried to push his service dog away, but Honor persisted.

“He was stopping the nightmare for me,” Baker said.

And so, this summer when he saw his master lying in the flag-draped casket, Honor pushed through the clutch of weeping family members, reared up, placed his paws on the edge and tried to climb in. Unable to comfort Baker, the lanky black dog in the camouflage-patterned vest curled up underneath.

For Baker, the long nightmare was finally over. But Honor was still on duty.

I guess this is my Veterans Day post.  My thoughts on this, on PTSD and the tragedy of stories like this is simply that if we can’t do a better job of helping our vets with these problems then we shouldn’t be sending them to war.   Maybe it’s unavoidable in times of danger, though WWII was the last time the nation’s future was actually at risk.  But for ‘Police Actions’ and ‘Peacekeeping missions’. No.

Many, probably most of the men we have sent to war come back without any lingering problem.  But as the draftee citizen army of the past is gone and forgotten, the new professional American Army is being run ragged. Some of today’s active duty combat soldiers have been ‘at war’ for four times longer than their WWII counterparts.  We’re looking more and more like the Legions of the old Roman Republic than we look like the WWII’s Willie and Joe.

I hope someday that the screening process will be able to filter out the men unable to handle the savagery and chaos of war.  Unless our nation (wonder if I can still say that) is in mortal danger we do not have the right to place the souls of men like Mr. Baker in peril.  Wade Baker committed ‘Suicide by Cop’ and was killed by police after firing a shot at the officers responding to a 911 call of a hostage situation.  Baker placed that call himself.  No police officers were injured in the exchange.

Not the GOP

Origin of “Stupid Party” & “Evil Party”

“We have two parties here, and only two. One is the evil party, and the other is the stupid party. I’m very proud to be a member of the stupid party. Occasionally, the two parties get together to do something that’s both evil and stupid. That’s called bipartisanship.” — M. Stanton Evans

Fred Thompson, former US Senator, dead at 73

Following his time in the senate, Thompson played District Attorney Arthur Branch on Law & Order for five seasons, leaving the show to run for president.

Thought to be a contender during the early stages of the 2008 Republican presidential primary cycle, Thompson drew little support in many of the early states and he took a big hit when the former Southern senator failed to win South Carolina. He eventually dropped out in late January.

I had hoped for the opportunity to vote for this man for President.  Common sense and honor.   Think of how much better off we would be today.

I’m not ashamed of any choices I’ve made in casting my vote for President.  I know I would not have been ashamed of my uncast vote for Fred.

Halloween Science (from the American Council on Science and Health) Spoilers!

Why Zombies Have Great Teeth – Fluoride

One just has to be able to accept certain scientific liberties to be a fan of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” But, it is well worth suspension of disbelief, since it’s easily the most entertaining hour on television.

But, sometimes the liberties are especially tough to swallow. For example, I have always wondered why the uninfected characters who routinely covered with zombie blood and guts, which routinely run down into their mouths, *and* into open wounds, never catch the virus that started the apocalypse. One character actually stuck his hand in the mouth of one of the things that was trying to bite him and ripped its head off. *That* was OK, yet, had he had been bitten on a cuticle during this attempt, he would have turned into one of them. It’s a bit of a stretch.

Then, there is there matter of blood flow. One of the show’s all time favorite characters, Hershel, was bitten on the leg a couple of seasons ago, yet survived because the group amputated his leg. The amputation took about five minutes, however, it takes just one minute for blood to circulate throughout your entire body. So, does someone wanna tell me how he didn’t get infected? Either way, Hershel’s luck ran out later:

But, perhaps, the most implausible thing about the series is the teeth. These things have incredible teeth:

  1. With one bite, any zombie (a.k.a. Walker) can tear off about 30 percent of a body. Bet you can’t do that.
  2. They all have full sets of teeth.
  3. The teeth are so straight that they one could easily mistake a gathering of the Walkers with a black-tie East Hampton Memorial Day party. With a slight difference in table manners (although, I won’t say in which direction).

How can we explain the teeth? It can’t simply be high calcium intake. The following experiment demonstrates this:

Anyone who has watched the show knows that if you hit a Walker in the head with *anything*— a hammer, knife, or Q-Tip—that the skull will collapse like a soufflé.

If calcium intake was responsible for the strength of teeth, then the skull would be expected to be strong as well. Obviously, this is false.

So what gives? I can find no alternative explanation to superb dental care.

Can it be fluoride in the water?

Unlikely, since according to Joe Mercola’s always-reliable site, fluoride is so dangerous that it alone could have been responsible for the Apocalypse, rather than a pathogen: “Another key factor ignored by the HHS is that fluoride is an endocrine disruptor—a finding reported for the first time in the NRC’s 2006 report. Endocrine disruptors have the potential to disrupt the biology of both humans and animals.”

Nope—the Walkers must simply take *very* good care of their teeth. Who knew how important flossing could be?

Fortunately, Mercola has a product for everything: (Only $34.99 with FREE SHIPPING!)

Did the combination of fluoride in the water plus Mercola’s overpriced string cause the end of the world in “The Walking Dead”? Certainly thought provoking.

This is potentially very good news for Mercola. You better believe that once the zombie apocalypse hits, news about his flesh-chomping aid will go viral (boo).  But, this is not such good news for Dr. Oz. His calcium supplements will NOT keep skulls from being crushed by a Mallomar.

Nonetheless, we wish him and you a happy Mallo-Ween.

John: The skulls of the Walking Dead crush easily for the same reason that vampires on ‘Buffy, The Vampire Slayer’ the vamps ‘dusted’ after being killed.

It makes it more dramatic as well as making it easier for the writers; imagine if a high school girl had to find a way to transport and dispose of five or six staked vamps every night and the exciting scenes of fighting off hordes of  the Dead and escaping wouldn’t work if the hero (once his gun is empty) had to haul out a chisel and hammer and after knocking his target to the ground (one at a time) have to sit on it and crack the skull.

Scenes of lines of The Dead patiently waiting for their turn to be destroyed on camera wouldn’t have the same ‘bite’.

His legacy is firming up

Barry is just about finished with his grand plan for the American Armed Forces, but to be fair he couldn’t have done it alone.  He had the enthusiastic help of both branches of Congress.  (and lets not forget the media)

Overall

In aggregate, the United States’ military posture is rated as “marginal” and is trending toward “weak.”

Overall, the Index concludes that the current U.S. military force is capable of meeting the demands of a single major regional conflict while also attending to various presence and engagement activities but that it would be very hard-pressed to do more and certainly would be ill-equipped to handle two nearly simultaneous major regional contingencies.

The consistent decline in funding and the consequent shrinking of the force have placed it under significant pressure. Essential maintenance continues to be deferred; fewer units (mostly the Navy’s platforms and the Special Operations Forces community) are being cycled through operational deployments more often and for longer periods; and old equipment is being extended while programmed replacements are problematic.

The shift (since last year’s Index) in two services—the Army and Air Force—to a lower category in the course of a single year is surprising and should be seen as evidence of the rapidly accumulating effects of inadequate funding during a time of higher operational demand and policies that have traded long-term health for near-term readiness.

The cumulative effect of these factors has resulted in a U.S. military that is marginally able to meet the demands of defending America’s vital national interests.
