A Review of Edith Efron’s The Apocalyptics

In 1984, while doing my dissertation research in toxicology, I received a complimentary copy of the first edition of Edith Efron’s impressive tome, The Apocalyptics. Since then, it has become quite worn and “supplemented” with so much highlighting, underlining, and notes in the margins of almost every page, that I recently ordered a copy of the most recent edition for my office, to have it on hand against the unlikely event that a co-worker ever shows an interest.

Edith Efron was a journalist, not a scientist. In what she described as “an intellectual detective story”, she compiled a mountain of historical facts that told the seldom acknowledged story of how “apocalyptic” environmentalism evolved from the scientifically bankrupt assumptions of a few ambitious doomsayers to become the governmental behemoth that, for good and ill, still shapes society, today.

Even though politics has always played a much more important role than science ever did in the development of environmental policy, Efron displayed an understanding of the relevant science which impressed many luminaries in the scientific community, at the time, ranging from Frederick Oehme, then President of the Society of Toxicology, to the world-renowned Bruce Ames, professor at UC Berkeley and member of the National Academy of Sciences. Director A.M. Weinburg of Oak Ridge, who had coined the term “trans-science” 12 years earlier, described Efron’s book as “a profoundly important challenge to the environmental movement”, noting that “If Rachel Carson’s ‘Silent Spring’ is the ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ of environmental cancer, then Edith Efron’s ‘The Apocalyptics’ is its ‘J’Accuse'”.

(The Apocalyptics lacks the sentimental charm and poetic alarm of ‘Silent Spring’, but it has the advantage of being far more accurate, both scientifically and historically.)

Professor Shimkin of the University of California at San Diego called The Apocalyptics “a monumental investigation”, adding what turned out to be the overly optimistic hope that “responsible toxicologists, cancer specialists and regulators will derive the lessons to be learned from Efron’s inquiry.” After working in this field for some 25 years, now, I understand why Dr. Shimkin’s hope was unrealistic, but I am still deeply disappointed that his hope remains, for the most part, unrealized.

If, regardless of what the ideologues of your chosen political party would have you believe, you are among that small minority of people who actually want to understand both the difference between science fiction and science fact in environmentalism, and the process by which the former came to masquerade as the latter in public policy, then this book is for you.

(Incidentally, for those who mistakenly think it should matter, I am a lifelong democrat. However, I am a scientist first, and always will be.)

Finally, don’t be put off by the age of the first edition. As a veteran government toxicologist, I can assure you that nothing in this book is “dated.” Today, the forces of error that were exposed in Efron’s original masterpiece have only become more powerful. And, the general public has been effectively trained to dismiss out of hand any “politically incorrect” science as nothing more than industry propaganda. The first time I read this book, the irony of its Orwellian publication date (1984) didn’t dawn on me. Now, almost 27 years later, that irony is painfully obvious.

Photos never lie.

As I’ve always said…

Photographs That Shatter Your Image of Famous People

#3. Just a Normal, Happy Family …

… the Manson Family, that is.

Charles Manson is the most famous serial killer of all time, and maybe the most famous criminal of all time. This is despite the fact that he didn’t carry out the killings himself — the “family” was a cult-slash-hippie commune that he formed that carried out at least a half dozen brutal killings on his orders. Look at how happy these freaks are!

See, you were right to be skeptical about hippies all this time — they’re all peace and love, but give them one charismatic dude in a loud shirt and they’ll do whatever he says. (Cracked.com)

Know what I mean?

OK, now happy thoughts!!

Honey, I think you got your panties on backwards.

Because the state has decided your frying pan grease is its business

What about the local DPW?  I can smell a new government department being created, fully manned and funded to fix a problem that no one else can see…

Happy Mothers Day

Happy Mothers Day…

I read this and thought that it would be a good excuse to start another post…

Thought for the day – from Rico

………..a very wise guru pal of mine sent along this “thought for the day”…..

“Thanking Obama for killing Bin Laden is like going into McDonalds and
thanking Ronald McDonald for the hamburger. It’s the guy cooking the
burger who should get the credit, not the clown.”

Yes they did it in Massachusetts,

Then they rescinded it as fast as they could.

Racist Republican breaks arm of blind black guy, just for fun

Mitt Romney was not at Chappaquiddick.  Mitt Romney has not been accused of rape.  Mitt Romney did not have an affair with a mob babe.  He didn’t have an affair with an actress who committed suicide later on.  Mitt Romney did not father a child out of wedlock.  Mitt Romney did not support the tapping of Martin Luther King’s phone.  Mitt Romney was never a member of the Ku Klux Klan.  Mitt Romney did not lie about his law school grades.

Romney didn’t study the Koran or scream “Death to America” as a muslim schoolboy…just saying.

Blood pressure warning!

50 Occupiers show up at courthouse in support of bridge bomb suspects who in no way represent Occupy movement

After these five were arrested, an Occupy organizer said they “don’t share its non-violent views and don’t represent Occupy Cleveland” (except maybe for the one who signed the warehouse lease).

WTF!!!

Sorry, but this is NOT a free country anymore.

Let me tell you who I am NOT endosing for President in 2012.

The Obama Administration’s Palestinian Civil War

There is no debate within the Obama Administration on whether to support Israel or not, mainly because there is no one within there who supports Israel. The only debate is which Anti-Israel terrorist group to support, Fatah or Hamas. That is because the civil war between Palestinian Arab terrorist groups, Fatah and Hamas, isn’t just taking place in Gaza and the West Bank, but also within the foreign policy establishment. Unlike the actual civil war, no one is being thrown off buildings or shot in the head, rather there are position papers and fierce behind the scenes debates. The split falls roughly between along ideological lines between the Clinton Administration veterans and some of Obama’s new radicals. Between liberals and the hard left.

There is one Democratic, Western oriented nation in the Mid-East that protects the rights of women and minorities.

That nation is Israel.   Israel is in danger and we are in danger because of this man.

The media is all worked up over a poll that shows the majority of Americans don’t think Obama is a Christians and nearly a 1/4 of Americans think that Obama is a Muslim. Naturally the “mainstream” conservative blogs are embarrassed by these results. Politico is calling it a new Birtherism. Left unasked is the question of why people might think that.

There’s Obama own statements on the topic in which he emphasized his family connections to Islam. This is what he said in Turkey;

Many other Americans have Muslims in their family, or have lived in a Muslim-majority country – I know, because I am one of them.

This is what he said later in Cairo

“Part of this conviction is rooted in my own experience. I am a Christian, but my father came from a Kenyan family that includes generations of Muslims. As a boy, I spent several years in Indonesia and heard the call of the azaan at the break of dawn and the fall of dusk.”

This time Obama included the mention that he is a Christian, but his emphasis was still on Islam.

There was Obama saying in an interview that he had a basically Muslim childhood…

“I was a little Jakarta street kid,” he said in a wide-ranging interview in his office. He once got in trouble for making faces during Koran study classes in his elementary school, but a president is less likely to stereotype Muslims as fanatics — and more likely to be aware of their nationalism — if he once studied the Koran with them.

Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”

There Obama was also documented as attending a mosque and his religion was listed as Islam.

In short, Obama’s family on his father’s side is Muslim. He grew up with a Muslim stepfather in a Muslim country. Then he went to Trinity Church and found a mentor there in the form of Jeremiah Wright. Wright was a former Black Muslim, his sermons still sound more Muslim than Christian, with their rantings about America, and obvious bigotry. Obama’s church was Muslim influenced, which may have attracted him to it and to Wright.

Take all this together, and it’s not too surprising why some people would have the perception that Obama is Muslim, in part or in whole.

______________________________________

The Media didn’t report on Obama’s background and his own words back in 2008 and they are not going to say anything … again.

I don’t think that Obama is sufficiently Muslim that he could be bothered to get down on his knees five times a day to pray. For Golf yes, praying, no. He’s self-centered, so guess his religion.

But he is NOT for America, he doesn’t love America nor does he wish America well. After four years we can see that in his actions, his friends and his supporters.

Look at his two Supreme Court appointments, disgraceful, and one more would destroy the courts protections against overreaching big government.

Don’t forget the appointment of so many “czars” who have wielded executive power  though unelected and used that power to attack the productive areas and members of American society.

His war on all carbon fuels, including natural gas, isn’t a government policy as much as a child’s tantrum.  Are you going to wait until you’re cold and poor before doing something?

There is NO excuse to vote again for this person, it would result in the destruction of America.

Doug: All fall down…

A must read…….

All Fall Down

by Victor David Hanson.

The temple of postmodern liberalism was rocked these last few weeks, as a number of supporting columns and buttresses simply crashed, leaving the entire edifice wobbling.

Fake but Accurate Identities?

The trivial Elizabeth Warren “high cheekbones” fraud nonetheless offered a draw-back-the-curtain look into the gears and levers of our national race industry. The real story is not that the multimillionaire liberal (and one-percenter) Warren fabricated a Cherokee identity for over a decade (to the delight of her quota-thirsty universities), but rather the notion that if a pink blond at Harvard can get away with faking a career-enhancing minority identity, then anyone, anywhere, can—or rather often has.

Doug: To marvel at and shake rattle and roll.

Remember the Day?

Worth your time if you don’t get dizzy

Doug.

This is a very interesting video with sound. After the Columbia disaster, which was caused by a chunk of External Tank (sprayed-on) insulation coming off during launch and penetrating the wings leading edge, NASA made aggressive plans to install cameras on the two Solid Rocket Boosters.

What you will see here is video taken from these cameras, all the way from just before launch, till splash down in the Atlantic.

Take note: upon ignition of the Space Shuttle Main Engines, 6.6 seconds before liftoff, the asymmetrical thrust causes a phenomenon called the “twang”. The tip of the External Tank actually displaces 23 inches (away from the thrust) as the entire Shuttle stack bends. I f you look carefully, you can see the entire stack bend when the SSME’s are lit off. Also pay particular attention to the debris coming off the stack forward of the orbiter’s wings. There is an appreciable amount of it.

These are More than just photographs!

Ever curious about how much a good embalmer or pole dancing instructor makes?…..by Michael Haltman at The Political Commentator

And as an aside, for an embalmer what exactly constitutes being “good”?

That could be a very difficult metric to quantify and measure because truth be told, and no disrespect intended, does anyone really go back later and check their work?

On the heels of the very disappointing April jobs report released by the BLS I thought it would be interesting to look at some jobs that are slightly out of the mainstream.

And while embalming or other funeral home work is a good and steady because as we know people are just dying to get in, it certainly cannot be considered mainstream.

Neither can septic tank supervisor, a profession some might consider to be a sh***y way to make a living or teaching proper pole dancing technique which is not a job for just any body!

But in a job market where the competition for getting hired is fierce, the thing for applicants to do may be to look for the job that’s off of everyone else’s radar and put it onto your own.

Read about some of these jobs at The Political Commentator here.

It’s a sad fact of comic fandom that the pioneers who created the most beloved characters often were compensated to such a small degree for their work for hire that in their later lives, they need financial assistance.

That’s where the Hero Initiative comes in.
