“Ale vs Stout” weekend is here.

It’s a sure sign that the summer is drawing to a close; this weekend is for many college students the date that they quit their summer job and head back to school.

We were on Cape Cod one summer at the end of August.  Back then I was drinking beer (and it’s heavier cousins).  From the short list of brews on tap there was one brand I liked, a stout.  I ordered it from the menu.  What arrived at the table was a golden hued liquid and a sip indicated that it was in fact an ale.

Catching the harried waitress as she passed by, I told her I had not received the stout I asked for.   She told me “Oh no, that is the stout”,  I prepared to strongly disagree.   My girlfriend interceded and nicely suggested that the waitress check with someone at the bar.   A while later, the manager came by with my stout, nicely cold, dark and foamy.   He apologized and explained that all his experienced summer help,  all college students, had left on Friday to head back to school.   He said that every summer he dreaded this weekend because the smooth running operation that he had built fell apart as he tried to find warm bodies to fill the gap until after Labor Day and the crowds stopped coming, when he could get by with his few permanent employees.

So I made a notation on my calendar, annually, to recognize the start of the period when I needed to keep my patience in hand and expectations low until after Labor Day.

I named this period, “Ale vs Stout” weekend.   So join me in throttling back your expectations of timely service and cultivate patience for incorrect food orders (dressing on the salad instead of on the side,  fried not grilled and Ale instead of Stout.) or receiving the wrong brew.

I’ll be the guy ordering the unsweetened Ice Tea.

Annual repost.

Long Read of the Day: Bidenomics & the Vilification of Trump | Armstrong Economics

Vilification of political opponents has become standard practice yet it degrades the public discourse and undermines any hope of democracy. There will be people who have just been brainwashed and refuse to open their minds to the fact that both sides engage in propaganda. The most important factor here is seeking the truth for the demonization of Trump, a single man, which is then used to justify the hatred of all Republicans that is the necessary step to win an election or even support a cry to unleash the dogs of war.

Read the whole thing…

The demonization of Trump, the attack on Mar-a-Largo, and his coming indictment will only backfire. It may secure the Democrats and fuel their hatred of Republicans even more, but Trump channeled the fury of average Americans against Washington back in 2016 and that will become the battle cry as a result of this attack. I am getting emails from overseas and they view the raid on Trump as politically motivated and as such, the respect of the United States has begun to crash and burn.

…So the demonization of Trump has divided the nation and in the process, it has set in motion its decline and fall.

Saturday night joke.

Tell it to the Marines.

After numerous intelligence reports of Putin’s demise that implied that Putin might actually be dead, Putin himself decided to send Biden a letter in his own handwriting to let him know he was still in the game. Biden opened the letter which appeared to contain a single line of a coded message, “370HSSV-0773H”. Biden was baffled, so he emailed it to John Kerry and to his aides. Neither had no clue what it said. So, they sent it to the FBI. No one could solve it at the FBI, so it went to the CIA, then to NSA. Still no clue as to the meaning.

The FBI finally asked Marine Corps Intelligence for help. Within a few seconds the Marine Corps called back with this message. “Tell Biden he’s holding the message upside down.”

“Inflation Bill” mostly taxes the middle class.

Surprise! Up to 90% of all new taxes in the Biden inflation bill could come from small businesses making less than $200k per year

Small business owners may soon be in for a lengthy and expensive battle with the IRS, tax experts warn.

A key provision in the Inflation Reduction Act — which throws an extra $80 billion to the IRS to improve the agency’s collection of under-reported income — will end up targeting small business owners to pay for the legislation, according to nonpartisan watchdog the Joint Committee on Taxation.

The group estimates that between 78% and 90% of the estimated additional $200 billion the IRS will collect will come from small businesses making less than $200,000 annually.

You may not be aware of it, but there are perverse incentives for the IRS to go after lower earners:

“The IRS will have to target small and medium businesses because they won’t fight back,” Joe Hinchman, executive vice president at National Taxpayers Union Foundation, told The Post. “We’ve seen this play out before … the IRS says ‘We’re going after the rich’ but when you’re trying to raise that much money, the rich can only get you so far.”

In fact, going after the lower and middle class can actually be more lucrative for IRS auditors than trying to get more money from the wealthy. “The rich have their lawyers and fight it — that’s why the poor are easier to go after,” Hinchman adds.
