Doug: The Worlds Largest Army

This just in……………..

WORLDS LARGEST ARMY

True story.

Here’s an interesting side bar. After the Japanese attacked our fleet in Pearl Harbor Dec 7, 1941, they could have sent their troop ships and carriers directly to California to finish what they started.

The prediction from our Chief of Staff was we would not be able to stop a massive invasion until they reached the Mississippi River . Remember, we had a 2 million man army and war ships…all fighting the Germans. So, why did they not invade?

After the war, the remaining Japanese generals and admirals were asked that question. Their answer…they know that almost every home had guns and the Americans knew how to use them. The world’s largest army… America ‘s hunters! I had never thought about this…. A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking conclusion:

There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin . Over the last several months, Wisconsin ‘s hunters became the eighth largest army in the world. More men under arms than in Iran . More than in France and Germany combined. These men deployed to the woods of a single American state to hunt with firearms, and no one was killed. AND That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods of Pennsylvania and Michigan ‘s 700,000 hunters, All of whom have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia and it literally establishes the fact that The hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.

The point? America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.

Hunting — it’s not just a way to fill the freezer. Hunting is a matter of national security. *************************************************

That’s why all enemies, Foreign and Domestic, want to see us disarmed.

Food for thought when we consider gun control.

Scientists grow sperm in laboratory dish

Scientists have made a major breakthrough that could soon see human sperm grown in the laboratory.

The problem of male infertility has grown over the last 50 years and has been matched by huge decrease in sperm counts in men. Some of this has been attributed to environmental factors such as pollution and female hormones appearing in plastic packaging.

The World from Berlin

‘Iran Is Playing with Fire’

Conservative daily Die Welt writes:

“Ten years ago former US President George W. Bush coined the phrase “axis of evil” when he gave his State of the Union speech on Jan. 29, 2002, describing Iraq, Iran and North Korea as regimes who aimed to threaten the West with terror and weapons of mass destruction. In Europe, no one wanted to accept this culturally antiquated moral-religious speech, also finding the term ‘axis’ confusing, as it implied these nations were forming an alliance. … Today, Iran, Syria and North Korea do advise and support each other about rockets and even nuclear questions.”

Bush was right in his diagnosis. Dictators remain dictators, evil and hostile. One shouldn’t tolerate them, and must instead fight them with all possible means. Especially Iran and North Korea.”

Why Irish soldiers who fought Hitler hide their medals

Mr Farrington’s fears are not groundless.

He was one of about 5,000 Irish soldiers who deserted their own neutral army to join the war against fascism and who were brutally punished on their return home as a result.

They were formally dismissed from the Irish army, stripped of all pay and pension rights, and prevented from finding work by being banned for seven years from any employment paid for by state or government funds.

A special “list” was drawn up containing their names and addresses, and circulated to every government department, town hall and railway station – anywhere the men might look for a job. It was referred to in the Irish parliament – the Dail – at the time as a “starvation order”, and for many of their families the phrase became painfully close to the truth.

92-year-old Phil Farrington, took part in the D-Day landings and helped liberate the German death camp at Bergen-Belsen. Most countries would and should be proud to claim men like Mr. Farrington. God Bless him. He would qualify as a Righteous among the Nations I would think.

NYT Squeezes Bad News From Good

Walter Russell Mead

A worthless desert in South Africa, largely inhabited by drought-stricken sheep and a handful of marginal farmers, turns out to contain rich natural gas reserves that could bring a new wave of economic growth to South Africa and provide huge numbers of well paying jobs for poorly educated workers. Oh! No! Wealth and prosperity! Poor Africans getting cheap energy and good paying jobs!

I can’t wait until the day I get to dance on the NYT grave.

Krauthammer on Why We’re Alone in the Universe

Modern satellite data suggest the number should be very high. So why the silence? Carl Sagan (among others) thought that the answer is to be found, tragically, in the high probability that advanced civilizations destroy themselves.

In other words, this silent universe is conveying not a flattering lesson about our uniqueness but a tragic story about our destiny. It is telling us that intelligence may be the most cursed faculty in the entire universe — an endowment not just ultimately fatal but, on the scale of cosmic time, near instantly so.

Out of all the planets in the galaxy on some of them the Browncoats may win.

Ten 2011 Examples of Major Media Malfeasance

As bad as this past year was, there’s every reason to believe that 2012 will be worse. The press has to figure out a way to drag a president who is very unpopular despite their best efforts to date across the November finish line while the White House continues its “oversight.”

Voters Want Growth, Not Income Redistribution

Lesson: If you want redistribution, you better first produce growth. Which the Obama Democrats’ policies have failed to do.

So why do the Democrats waste their time trying to get blood from a stone while the economy is so down? Because they believe its all a zero sum game that the wealth that’s out there now is all the wealth there is going to be. Since their only true religion is Environmentalism they would rather prevent anyone else from trying to produce any more wealth.  Democrato delenda est.

Last paddle of the year?

I’ve been wondering this month if the wind was ever going to abate. Or is that, Avast?

In the summer and fall I don’t mind the wind as much, but in the winter with chill water and a stiff breeze and all the spray that blows directly onto my face. Brrrh! So I waited, the forecast on one day( that would have been fine otherwise), 15-20mph with 30 mph gusts. On another fine day, 20-25mph with 35mph gusts, no thank you. Then we had several days with 25-40mph winds with 50mph gusts, Ah, come-on give me a break. (They were wrong about that days forecast, the gusts were 65mph.)

Then today rolls along with fine weather, 5 mph winds, temperature 40 degrees, partly cloudly, water temperature 47.  Tide at launch was dead low, but that is not a problem from the Driftway ramp in Scituate. At this time of year the only people I’m sharing the waters with are the duck hunters. They are armed, I’m very polite.

None of the hunters I encountered had dogs in the boat, I wonder if I could have hired myself out a retriever?

Anyone looking for a missing lobster pot?

Make that pots.

First day after a long stretch of heavy weather its not unusual to find a lot of lobster pots up on the beach.

This is only exposed at dead low tide, but its always there and has been for a very long time. Some of the damage to the pilings comes from being hit by boats under way.

Somebody declared the war is over.

No Ticker Tape Parade for Iraq War Troops – Per Obama Administration

Officials in New York and Washington say they would be happy to help stage a big celebration, but Pentagon officials say they haven’t been asked to plan one.

Instead Barry would like a walk down Broadway with his leftist supporters at his back and cheering Union workers on the sidewalk. He doesn’t want ticker tape, he wants live stock brokers and investment bankers thrown out the windows as he goes by.

Forced terminations with no pensions or benefits is no way to reward airmen after years of faithful service.

This holiday season, the Air Force has “separated” (that is, fired) 157 officers on the eve of their retirement, including pilots flying dangerous missions, to avoid paying their pensions. According to Department of Defense Instructions, those within six years of their 20-year retirement (with no disciplinary blemishes on their record) have the option to remain in service. Nevertheless, the Air Force is committing terminations of airmen a few years away from retirement en masse, citing budget constraints.

A law that pro-rated the service-members pensions so that being released early would not result in no retirement benefits at all expired in 2001. At the very least, this law should be re-instated.

From the comments: Note that these are OFFICERS not all PILOTS.
Note that they have ALL been submitted for promotion twice and have not made the grade.
Note that they have further been submitted for retention to retirement and were NOT selected.
Three separate reviews by their own commanders and three different senior officer boards.
Note that regardless of commissioning source(USAFA, ROTC, OTS), there were NEVER guarantees of a retirement when you were a Lt nor as a Major. Lt Col would get you there.
But all of us KNEW it was up or out. Make promotion or make other plans.

… They HAVE to have seen this coming and if they DID NOT, they are not good officers and are not paying attention to their own careers and God only knows what else.   This guy makes a good point, but I still feel that there is fairness in pro-rated military pensions.

Doug: F35B Video

F-35B on the USS Wasp

This video is fresh (for the public).

It was made just six weeks ago in the Atlantic, just off Newport News (Hampton Roads), Virginia .

These are the latest sea trials of the F-35B on the USS Wasp.

They were very successful, with 74 VL’s and STO’s in a three week period.

The media and the program critics had predicted that we would burn holes in the deck and wash sailors overboard. Neither of which happened. You will notice a sailor standing on the bow of the ship as the jet rotates.

That was an intentional part of the sea trials.

The USS Wasp is an amphibious assault ship designed to embark a Marine Expeditionary Unit.

It is capable of simultaneously supporting

rotary and fixed wing STOVL aircraft and amphibious landing craft operations.

For this test deployment the USS Wasp was outfitted with special instrumentation to support

and measure the unique operating environment as the F-35B conducted short takeoffs and vertical landings.

No catapult…No hook…

The shape and scope of warfare – worldwide – just changed.

Car Talk, corruption, public at risk or same old, same old.

Tom & Ray Magliozzi / Car Talk

Concerning the dude with the flats, I’d move. Definitely.

Ten murderers hitting street with board OK

The State of Massachusetts starts out with very liberal judges known for giving all the breaks to the typical career criminal on trial or up for sentencing. On top of that the State Parole Board has in the past flung open the cell doors on over forty convicted lifers a year. This last year there was a bit of a shake up after a recently paroled life long criminal and murderer shot and killed a police-officer in the commission of another felony.

After a “shake-up” of the parole board, this year ten murderers are being released. (Off year I guess). This is why the people want the death penalty as a option, they can’t parole a executed man.

Governor Devel Patrick was a activist for prison inmates before being elected, and he got to “shake-up” the parole board. Plus, this advocate for the criminal class has attacked the Massachusetts Cori Registration laws, the laws that used to protect public from felons working in many sensitive occupations such as child care. Those are Patrick’s priorities. Added to the fact that the gun control laws are some of the toughest in the country (It’s also more expensive to get a gun permit with costs running over $600) these princes of crime are being released on a mainly unarmed citizenry. I take that back, citizens are armed, subjects are not.

Review of out-of-state casinos finds…

Beacon Hill has bet the house on casinos providing an economic boom, but in other states, the gleaming gaming palaces have brought political corruption, drugs, prostitution and other social vices — including some scandals involving gambling goliaths seeking to do business in the Bay State.

1,000 metal thefts every week as growing ‘menace’ blights Britain

In some areas, metal theft is reported to represent a tenth of total recorded crime while the British Transport Police now ranks the issue second only to fighting terrorism in its priorities.

The use of barbed or razor wire in England to protect personal property from theft is forbidden as the risk of harm to the thieves is not allowed.
