Recently the Western press picked up on Japan’s first “Cuddle Cafe” or “sleep together shop” in Tokyo’s electronics & nerd culture center of Akihabara.

The glowing write ups taken from a Japanese source seemed to promise something like a spotlessly-clean dentist’s surgery for unloved salary-men to grab 40 winks in the soft arms or accommodating lap of a young, immaculately pyjama-clad Japanese lovely.

In 2004, the “female lap pillow” debuted in Japan, complete with a mini skirt and soft, rounded knees. It sold for $90 and became so popular, a number of “knockoffs” were made.
Men found the female pillow soothing, and for $90 could have a “female” lap to lay their head in forever. The trend was short lived.

Look carefully at the B-17 and note how shot up it is – one engine dead, tail, horizontal stabilizer and nose shot up. It was ready to fall out of the sky. (This is a painting done by an artist from the description of both pilots many years later.) Then realize that there is a German ME-109 fighter flying next to it. Now read the story below. I think you’ll be surprised…

ATT000013

Charlie Brown was a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot with the 379th Bomber Group at Kimbolton , England . His B-17 was called ‘Ye Old Pub’ and was in a terrible state, having been hit by flak and fighters. The compass was damaged and they were flying deeper over enemy territory instead of heading home to Kimbolton. After flying the B-17 over an enemy airfield, a German pilot named Franz Steigler was ordered to take off and shoot down the B-17. When he got near the B-17, he could not believe his eyes. In his words, he ‘had never seen a plane in such a bad state’… The tail and rear section was severely damaged, and the tail gunner wounded. The top gunner was all over the top of the fuselage. The nose was smashed and there were holes everywhere.

Despite having ammunition, Franz flew to the side of the B-17 and looked at Charlie Brown, the pilot. Brown was scared and struggling to control his damaged and blood-stained plane.

Aware that they had no idea where they were going, Franz waved at Charlie to turn 180 degrees. Franz escorted and guided the stricken plane to, and slightly over, the North Sea towards England .. He then saluted Charlie Brown and turned away, back to Europe …

When Franz landed he told the CO that the plane had been shot down over the sea, and never told the truth to anybody. Charlie Brown and the remains of his crew told all at their briefing, but were ordered never to talk about it. More than 40 years later, Charlie Brown wanted to find the Luftwaffe pilot who saved the crew. After years of research, Franz was found. He had never talked about the incident, not even at post-war reunions. They met in the USA at a 379th Bomber Group reunion, together with 25 people who were alive – all because Franz never fired his guns that day. When asked why he didn’t shoot them down, Stigler later said, “I didn’t have the heart to finish those brave men. I flew beside them for a long time. They were trying desperately to get home and I was going to let them do that. I could not have shot at them. It would have been the same as shooting at a man in a parachute.” Both men died in 2008. This is a true story..

This was back in the days when there was some kind of honour in being a warrior. They proudly wore uniforms, and they didn’t hide behind women and children, nor did they plant bombs amidst innocent crowds.

To the girls we’ve loved not to wisely or too well…

Drive-In Movies Nearly Extinct as Studios Move to Stop Distributing 35-Millimeter Prints

Studios are moving to stop distributing 35-millimeter film prints. Converting to digital is an expense many theaters in the fading drive-in industry can’t afford.

In most of the country, drive-ins close for the winter. Some may not reopen this spring because of the high cost of digital conversion, said John Vincent Jr., the president of the United Drive-In Theatre Owners Assn. He declined to speculate on the number that may close.

None of the eight operating drive-in theaters in Southern California have yet converted to digital.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow,” Vincent said. He plans to spend $75,000 to convert the drive-in he owns on Cape Cod.

I blogged about this digital conversion earlier…

But I didn’t realize that it was going to hit Drive-in Theaters so hard, sorry baby!tumblr_m7b0vuF4h31qj92xeo1_500

Verrry Interesting!!!  I wasn’t aware that some of that gear was in private hands. The old stuff can be grandfathered, but how did the modern (full auto) mini’s and cannon get free? (Heavy metal just wants to be free?)

Must research.

Modern and legal, The Semi-automatic Rifle.

A lot of people, especially here in the Northeast, have asked “Who needs an assault rifle”?  Well, I know. Do you?

Of course, I’d prefer that we don’t pander to the media’s control of the narrative by utilizing the hot phrase “Assault Rifle” instead of “modern-legal-semi-automatic rifle”.

The correct number one answer wasn’t on the video. Barry.  He’s not going to stop while we have any remaining wealth or vestige of freedom. The day the Founding Fathers were concerned about is nearly upon us.

Get there early, before the PC crowd.

Gillette launches make-out campaign to promote shavingLips

Gillette is asking America to weigh in on whether stubble is the culprit for a decline in kissing with the launch of a nationwide Kiss & Tell live experiment.

Kiss & Tell will travel to 15 U.S. cities to find out if women prefer to kiss stubble or smooth-shaven men. The experiment, which asks real-life couples to make-out in-person — with and without stubble — to determine which facial hair style women find more kissable, kicks off today with simultaneous events in both New York City and Los Angeles.

Nikki Reed: Kiss & Tell in Times SquareNikki Reed

Helping couples the world over with their makeout mastery, Nikki Reed showed up in Times Square, NYC for the Gillette Kiss & Tell Event today (January 16).

Nikki tweeted, “I’m helping @Gillette find out what women really want in a kiss. To see if the #kissandtell tour is coming to u, visitwww.kissandtellus.com #spon.”

According to a press release, “Research shows that people are kissing less than ever and that 66% of women have avoided kissing a guy because he had facial hair. With Valentine’s Day on the horizon and signs showing that the kiss may be on the decline, Gillette is asking couples across America to help determine if stubble could be the trouble.”

I know what the PC crowd will do with this and I would guess the tour will be skipping a stop in San Francisco…

Update roller-coaster

Windows 8: Not for Old-at-Heart PCs

If you’re thinking of upgrading your PC to the new Windows 8, be prepared for hassles and disappointment, especially if the computer is more than a year or two old—even if it technically meets the basic requirements to run the new version.

Bleech! That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it!

Oracle releases Java fix, but security concerns remain

Oracle released Java 7 update 11 (Java 7u11) on Sunday following a warning from the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) advising users to disable the software due to a serious and previously unknown security vulnerability. Even with the available fix, CERT, part of the Department of Homeland Security, is still advising users to disable Java on their systems unless running the software is “absolutely necessary.”

[RELATED: Time to Give Java the Boot?]

The so-called Zero Day flaw was actively being used to secretly install malware on systems of unsuspecting victims and the exploit affected Windows, Mac, and Linux users, according to CERT’s security bulletin. The vulnerability affects versions of Java 7, and does not apply to Java 6.
