Doug: Interpreting the Chinese – Robert D. Kaplan’s Global Affairs

Interpreting the Chinese

February 12, 2014 | 1004 GMT

Stratfor

By Robert D. Kaplan and Rodger Baker

What are the Chinese up to? Why raise tensions as much as they have in the Pacific Basin? Beijing’s recent declaration of new fishing rules in disputed territorial waters has raised the ire of maritime neighbors and the consternation of the United States. It follows on the heels of the recently declared air defense identification zone, or ADIZ, above disputed islands in the East China Sea, which led American B-52s from Guam to overfly the region — as a challenge to China’s declaration and as a statement in defense of Japan, which also claims these islands. In the face of American and Japanese military resolve, can China even defend its claim to the Diaoyu (Senkaku in Japanese) island chain? Or can China truly dominate the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea? Continue reading

Doug: In the mail.

Very interesting data:

CROW KILLS

Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone’s relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.
However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird’s beaks and claws. By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.
MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.
The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout “Cah”, not a single one could shout “Truck.”
Absolutely amazing!

And now, for a refreshing spot of Aussie advertising!

Doug: What the daughter said

A man was telling his buddy “You won’t believe what happened last night.

My daughter walked into the living room and said, “Dad, cancel my allowance immediately, forget my college tuition loan, rent my room out, throw all my clothes out the window, take my TV and my laptop. Please take any of my jewelry to the Salvation Army or Cash Converters. Then, sell my car, take my front door key away from me and throw me out of the house. Then, disown me and never talk to me again. Don’t forget to write me out of your will and leave my share to any charity you choose.”

“Holy Smokes,” replied the friend, “she actually said that?”

“Well, she didn’t put it quite like that. She actually said, ‘Dad, meet my new boyfriend– Mohammed. We’re going to work together on Hillary’s election campaign!’

Comment about comments

I don’t use DISQUS as the commenting engine here.  One reason is that I don’t trust them not to do tracking of visitors from site to site. Another reason, (and I did try them out myself), is that there are legions of progressive trolls roaming around out there and DISQUS makes it far to easy to pursue and harass the people you disagree with wherever they go on the internet.  With DISQUS you can not only bring up a window on any commenter to read what they have been saying, but click through to each site they visit and harass them.   Unfortunately, many sites I’ve been going to have installed DISQUS; such as Coyote Blog and even the Boston Herald.

I’ve made commenting here as safe and easy as possible, you can be anonymous or use a web identity. I only hold your first comment for moderation and after that is approved, (so I know that you are a real person), any future comments are passed through.  As any site must, I keep an eye on what is posted and if it is objectionable I would delete it. That has only happened once.  (no calling the USS Enterprise a garbage scow)

A lot of the linked articles go back to sites where there is either no comments or require a lot of information to get clearance to post, such as requiring you set up an account with them.  As I like to say; This is Liberty Hall, feel free to spit on the mat and call the cat a bastard.

The reason I started this blog was that after the passing of my wife, which was six months after my forced retirement.  I needed something to do and it gave me a place to publish my kayaking photos.  Not to many of those since last summer, spinal cyst, three shots in the spine and improvement is slow.  I hoped to get some back and forth going with commenters, find some online friends.  But it seems towards that goal I’ve failed. My most popular post, (per views), is on Lyme disease and the apparent reason for it’s popularity is the wet T-shirt picture of Jenny McCarthy I added as a derisive statement about her anti-vaccine stance. Over five thousand hits and not one comment.   Almost 1,100 posts and (after subtracting my replies, pingbacks and co-editor Doug) barely one hundred comments.

The country is in a dangerous time, the Republic is in grave danger and I’ve tried to use this blog to illuminate the hidden stories that the main stream press and media refuse to cover.  The lack of feedback indicates that I’m not being heard.  So I’m seriously wondering if I should drop this and concentrate on finding a date for Saturday night.
