Hold your nose, another Obama Regime scandal

Scandal is the measure by which we mark our painful progress towards the end of the Obama Regime.  To wit;

FCC’s Friends and Family Plan

How minority set-asides got tangled up in the net neutrality holy war.

Racial spoils are making a comeback at the Federal Communications Commission after being put mostly to rest in an important 2006 reform.

The latest sign is a quiet, nonpublic vote by Chairman Tom Wheeler and his two fellow Democrats to approve a waiver for minority entrepreneur David Grain, allowing him a 25% discount in this fall’s spectrum auction—a nice windfall.

Mr. Grain already owns several spectrum licenses acquired as part of a swap between AT&T and Verizon—which he leases back to AT&T and Verizon. This alone should have made him ineligible for bidding credits. Credits aren’t supposed to be available to those who are looking merely to flip spectrum for easy profits.

(Full article is behind the WSJ paywall.)  It has been clear, in this the sixth year of the Obama Regime that any money left lying around or that must pass through the hands of any agency staffed by this socialist mob is likely to get lifted or “taxed”.  Much the same way that Donie used to “tax” my deserts on the way out of kitchen to my plate.

So a spectrum allocation program meant to be a fair, equitable way of distributing and re-using public airways has been drafted as a part of Barry’s wealth re-distribution and campaign coffers program.  Oh yes it is!

From the moment Bloomberg News reported the David Grain waiver two weeks ago, the focus has been on Mr. Grain’s political giving. He was a big Obama bundler and lately has been generous to South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn, whose daughter is the FCC’s Ms. Clyburn.

By 2016 it would not surprise me if we discover that the Statue of Liberty is a Styrofoam replica and the copper original turns up sold to a salvage yard in Brooklyn.

How I handle chain letters

Today I received a email from a group that usually passes around cute or funny pictures or stories.  But the email today was identified as a preface to a new book by Lee Iacocca; Where Have All the Leaders Gone?, a rant against the presidency of Barrak Obama.

The email also challenged those who agreed to “pass it on”.  Well I pass things on by putting them in a post.  But I make an effort to not blindly repeat what I get without some fact checking.  This one unfortunately is a lie.  First it was not just published, this is from Business Week in 2007;

Iacocca devotes far too many pages to an attack on everything from President George W. Bush and the nation’s schools to the health-care system, obesity, and America’s pill-popping culture.

Right church, wrong pew. Secondly  a detailed analysis on Snopes.com shows that the version being floated on the internet is a heavily edited and rewritten copy that takes all reference to President Bush out and inserts whole sentences and paragraphs that attack the Obama administration.  A wonderful thing to be sure, but he wasn’t even elected when this book was first published.

I stand second to no one in my contempt for Barak Obama but I don’t think that plagiarism and deceit advance the cause. If the person or persons who re-wrote this would sit down and write an original piece slamming the failures of the Obama Regime I would applaud and support it.   If anyone is interested in Lee Iacocca’s actual book;

Everything that is wrong with Massachusetts in one story.

CORI reforms kept suspected drug-dealing DPW worker’s rap sheet under wraps

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

Suspended DPW worker Kenneth Clark, who pleaded not guilty yesterday to dealing heroin out of his work truck, has a rap sheet with some 100 charges that include convictions for armed assault and drug dealing near a school — all of which the city had no clue about when hiring him due to a relaxing of criminal background checks under the Menino administration.

The rest of the story as published in the Boston Herald is below the fold.  So we have the revolving door Justice System as administrated by MA Liberal Judges who don’t see that their job is to protect the public from the animals that have been nurtured by the Progressive paradise that is Boston.   Pass them through the public education system and kick them out the door when they get too old.  When the police and the District Attorney’s DO do their job then the famous Mass Judges will sentence them to the minimum and then let them out when they have served a fraction of that.  (In most states there are severe sentencing laws for dealing drugs near a school as there are in Mass. but somehow this felon has been incarcerated five times including a conviction for the above mentioned crime which carries a 15 year prison sentence and yet he is out.  And still only 49 years old.)  What saved Mr. Clark from a life sentence (last time at bat) under (2012) Mass Three Strikes law was his last three drug cases being dismissed due to all the evidence being thrown out of court.  That lucky break illustrates another weakness in the Mass way of doing business.  Affirmative action and the lack of proper supervision endemic in all Mass public agencies.

And finally Mr. Clark ends up (four months after his lucky break) employed by the City of Boston and driving a public works truck (after having his drivers license suspended three times which no one noticed) until he gets caught again.  Do you think he waited very long to resume his drug dealing business? From the cities vehicle so he didn’t even have to buy his own gas.

In attacking the CORI (serious offender database) system, the Governor and new Mayor of Boston have shown a stunning lack of concern for the victims of the crimes.  (The voters who elected them, mostly)  The majority of their concern and efforts have been in defense of people like Mr. Clark.

In the end, it is the continued election and re-election of  liberal politicians such as Gov. (Mini-Me) Patrick and Mayor Walsh that ensures that Massachusetts will continue it’s descent into the cesspool of progressive paradises.

CDC has a new spokesman and news release.

PoeTHE “Red Death” had long devastated the country. No pestilence had ever been so fatal, or so hideous. Blood was its Avatar and its seal — the redness and the horror of blood. There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution. The scarlet stains upon the body and especially upon the face of the victim, were the pest ban which shut him out from the aid and from the sympathy of his fellow-men. And the whole seizure, progress and termination of the disease, were the incidents of half an hour.

Sound familiar?  Remind you of the descriptions of any plagues raging through Western African countries right now?

I’m struck by how similar current crises are to the late Tom Clancy’s books.   Executive Orders (1996)  had a chilling account of Muslims terrorists, backed by Iran, using Ebola to attack the US.

Tom’s last book Command Authority (novel) (December 2013, with Mark Greaney) mirrored what’s happening to the Ukraine.  A Russian strong man threatens or attacks East European nations ( Estonia and Ukraine) using shadow forces and Pro-Russian militants in the threatened nations as cover and for an excuse.  The easy annexation of the Crimea was so close to the actual events a year later that one has to wonder, how is it that an ex-insurance salesman can correctly predict the Geo-Political future so well and the President of the USA with all his resources and advisers can’t?

By the way, the (real) spokesman for the CDC and the State Dept. did say that the risk of an Ebola epidemic due to bringing the infected patients to the US was “low”.  Not zero, but low. I wonder what Tom or Mr. Poe would say to that?  And then there is the “Open Borders” problem.

The Masque of the Red Death...

Not a feature it’s a bug.

Colorado business owner fights back after falling victim to ‘caller ID spoofing’

When Stayc Lafean launched a small towing company last month, spending $5,000 to print her new business phone number on trucks and advertisements, the Colorado woman never imagined she would fall victim to “caller ID spoofing” — a scam in which virtually untraceable parties use someone else’s number to disguise the identity of their own and inundate cell phones and land lines with relentless telemarketing robo-calls.

In Lafean’s case, the phone number for her Colorado Springs towing company is being used as a front for a company claiming to sell time-shares and robo-calling people all over the U.S. and beyond.

The problem began on Monday when Lafean said she received 275 phone calls within six hours “from people who had my number on their caller ID.”

“This company put my new number into some auto-dialing system,” said Lafean, who filed a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, claiming her business is suffering because people are “constantly” calling her number — in most cases angry about the robo-calls — and potential customers are unable to get through.

I stopped paying for Caller-ID on my home phone several years ago.  At the same time I turned off all the ringers for that line.  I still need a phone number to give out to the numerous doctor’s offices, banks and anyone else who demands a phone number to conduct business these days. Everyone sells their customers numbers today and I refuse to be someones marketing fool tool.

I’ve written about this subject which is near and undear to my heart.

Unlawful verus Unwanted Calls and Verizon’s response.

Unknown Caller

Caller ID and Robocallers. Jeeves to the rescue?

“Swatting” is related to my earlier posts on Caller ID spoofing. Updated Feb 2013.

If Caller-ID was absolutely accurate and only showed valid information then I and many other people would be willing to pay for it.  As a telecom engineer of forty years experience I can affirm that it is not impossible to stop the transmission of false data.   How shortsighted of the carrier companies to not have stopped this from happening many years ago.  It devalued the worth of the feature for which they charged a premium. They could do it now, but they won’t.

I might have retained Caller-ID if it cost no more than 25 cents monthly.  But $9.95?  Forgetaboutit!

It’s the sad comment of the early 21st Century, nothing gets fixed. Everything slides into a miasma of festering corruption.  It’s the age of Obama.  (Sorry, never miss an opportunity to piss in his ear).

Where are the bullet holes?

As an urban legend these photos purport to show a series of road signs along the highway.  The accompanying email text claims that the Federal Government is threatening to withhold federal highway funds unless the signs are removed, but the brave state government has refused.

The state involved has been identified as Virginia, Washington, Texas , etc…

Likewise the road or highway changes (although in one case someone forgot to change the road to one that actually runs through the state mentioned).

Examination of the photos (based on identical blemishes) show that there are only two signs, one with Obama holding the sign in his right hand, one holding it in his left.  Where-ever these signs are they were up long enough to see the trees in the background go from bare branches to fully leafed.

Anyone know where these signs are (or were)?   Let me know.   My guess is that they were erected on private property and far enough back from the road to preclude pot shots.  If you put these signs near a major road they would be swiss cheese in a week.

First good news in a long, long time.

Pope meets with Sudanese Christian woman who faced death sentence for apostasy

https://i0.wp.com/a57.foxnews.com/global.fncstatic.com/static/managed/img/U.S./876/493/pope-francis-Meriam-Ibrahim.jpg

Pope Francis met privately Thursday with Meriam Ibrahim, the Sudanese Christian woman who faced a death sentence for refusing to renounce her faith, blessing the woman after she was flown to Italy on an Italian government jet.

The Vatican characterized the visit with Ibrahim, 27, her husband and their two small children as “very affectionate.”

The 30-minute encounter took place just hours after the family landed at Rome’s Ciampino airport, accompanied by an Italian diplomat who helped negotiate her release, and welcomed by Italy’s premier, who hailed it as a “day of celebration.”

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said the pope “thanked her for her faith and courage, and she thanked him for his prayer and solidarity” during the half-hour meeting Thursday. Francis frequently calls attention to the suffering of those persecuted for their religious beliefs.

Lombardi said the presence of “their wonderful small children” added to the affectionate tone of the meeting. Ibrahim was presented with a rosary, a gift from the pope

Meriam, talk to the guy in white will you?  Straighten him out will you, he thinks in a world in which Christians are being wiped out in some parts of the world that “Capitalism” is the biggest problem.

Hey, “Rio Frankie”.  Capitalism isn’t your problem, the lost churches in the middle east that for over a millennium have kept the faith of Christ and been an example to Christianity lost on your watch are your problem.

Ya, I got a thing for space weather, makes more sense than planet earth at present.

How a solar storm two years ago nearly caused a catastrophe on Earth

Solar flare preceding CMEs on July 22, 2012 (NASA)

On July 23, 2012, the sun unleashed two massive clouds of plasma that barely missed a catastrophic encounter with the Earth’s atmosphere.  These plasma clouds, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), comprised a solar storm thought to be the most powerful in at least 150 years.

“If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces,” physicist Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado tells NASA.

But Climate Change is the most serious threat to human civilization according to the One. /snark off.

Solar physicists compare the 2012 storm to the so-called Carrington solar storm of September 1859, named after English astronomer Richard Carrington who documented the event.

“In my view the July 2012 storm was in all respects at least as strong as the 1859 Carrington event,” Baker tells NASA. “The only difference is, it missed.”

During the Carrington event, the northern lights were seen as far south as Cuba and Hawaii according to historical accounts.  The solar eruption “caused global telegraph lines to spark, setting fire to some telegraph offices,” NASA  notes.

NASA says the July 2012 storm was particularly intense because a CME had traveled along the same path just days before the July 23 double whammy – clearing the way for maximum effect, like a snowplow.

“This double-CME traveled through a region of space that had been cleared out by yet another CME four days earlier,” NASA says. ” As a result, the storm clouds were not decelerated as much as usual by their transit through the interplanetary medium.”

NASA’s online article about the science of this solar storm is well-worth the read.  Perhaps the scariest finding reported in the article is this:  There is a 12 percent chance of a Carrington-type event on Earth in the next 10 years according to Pete Riley of Predictive Science Inc.

“Initially, I was quite surprised that the odds were so high, but the statistics appear to be correct,” Riley tells NASA.  “It is a sobering figure.”

From NASA, description of the 1859 event…

At 11:18 AM on the cloudless morning of Thursday, September 1, 1859, 33-year-old Richard Carrington—widely acknowledged to be one of England’s foremost solar astronomers—was in his well-appointed private observatory. Just as usual on every sunny day, his telescope was projecting an 11-inch-wide image of the sun on a screen, and Carrington skillfully drew the sunspots he saw.

On that morning, he was capturing the likeness of an enormous group of sunspots. Suddenly, before his eyes, two brilliant beads of blinding white light appeared over the sunspots, intensified rapidly, and became kidney-shaped. Realizing that he was witnessing something unprecedented and “being somewhat flurried by the surprise,” Carrington later wrote, “I hastily ran to call someone to witness the exhibition with me. On returning within 60 seconds, I was mortified to find that it was already much changed and enfeebled.” He and his witness watched the white spots contract to mere pinpoints and disappear.

It was 11:23 AM. Only five minutes had passed.

Just before dawn the next day, skies all over planet Earth erupted in red, green, and purple auroras so brilliant that newspapers could be read as easily as in daylight. Indeed, stunning auroras pulsated even at near tropical latitudes over Cuba, the Bahamas, Jamaica, El Salvador, and Hawaii.

Even more disconcerting, telegraph systems worldwide went haywire. Spark discharges shocked telegraph operators and set the telegraph paper on fire. Even when telegraphers disconnected the batteries powering the lines, aurora-induced electric currents in the wires still allowed messages to be transmitted.

“What Carrington saw was a white-light solar flare—a magnetic explosion on the sun,” explains David Hathaway, solar physics team lead at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

In 1859 water distribution was by gravity, animal or muscle power (bucket/well  some assembly required), today the majority of human water supplies rely on power to move the billions of gallons.  (East coast cities are the luckiest since their primary systems were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.)  No heat, no light, no emergency services.  Oh, and did I mention the fires?  Thousands, tens of thousands of fires just within the US sparked by shorted out transformers and overloaded electrical wires.  And the fire trucks trying to get out of their stations but delayed by the need to find someone who remembers how to open the damn doors manually.

The danger can be minimized or even averted by planning,  spending some money in the right places and early action.   This is not a political football and is the one place where partisan politics should not interfere.

We are Doomed!
