Overton window
The Overton window is the range of ideas tolerated in public discourse, also known as the window of discourse. The term is named after Joseph P. Overton, who stated that an idea’s political viability depends mainly on whether it falls within this range, rather than on politicians’ individual preferences.
I think this is the Democrats basic plan, since most Americans 50 years ago thought that most of the ideas that identify the Democrats today were insane (if they could have imagined them at all), then obviously within that time period the Democrats have been mostly successful in moving the Overton Window.
It is also the reason that the Progressives have worked to stop the teaching of actual history in our schools.
