GE’s Big Profits Beefing Up Other Countries: Less Confidence in US Investing

General Electric (GE) is using it’s huge non-U.S. profits to invest in other countries. Six other corporations, including Intel, are doing the same. All seven sit on Obama’s advisory council for jobs and competitiveness. Robert Reich says it’s a “sure signal” they are “betting less on America.”

On writing

Read what Rear Admiral Bradley A. Fiske had to say about the Naval Institute in Proceedings, Vol. 45 No. 192, February 1919:

One of the factors which has handicapped the Naval Institute has been a curious shyness about writing articles for it. This shyness existed much more in the past than it does now; but it still exists to a degree that is really lamentable. Scores of times I have said to some officer who had made some suggestion, or described some instructive experience, “You ought to send that to the Institute,” and he has answered, “But I can’t write.” Now, any man who can think can write. Writing is merely recording. If a man has anything to record, writing can record it.

The so-called faculty of writing is not so much a faculty of writing as it is a faculty of thinking. When a man says, “I have an idea but I can’t express it”; that man hasn’t an idea but merely a vague feeling. If a man has a feeling of that kind, and will sit down for a half an hour and persistently try to put into writing what he feels, the probabilities are at least 90 percent that he will either be able to record it, or else realize that he has no idea at all. In either case, he will do himself a benefit.

Yes Sir!

I read this and thought it the most succinct and perceptive comment on procrastination in writing  I’ve ever read. Now to see if I can take it to heart.

If you aren’t familar with “Proceedings” go to the library and check it out. I believe that the concept of living history interviews started with this magazine.

Indian Head River

Indian Head River and Luddams Ford

I’ve wanted to get a new smaller kayak for the smaller river tributaries and I wanted a “set on top” kayak to play in the surf, this is both.

Eight feet long, lightweight, self draining (self filling as it turned out) on sale at Sports Authority. It wallows like a drunken fat man and don’t track worth a damn but it fits inside the Element and keeps me on top of the water or at least level with it.

The launching point at Indian Head Drive is a quick downstream access the upper North River with its marshes filled with waterfowl. Up stream however, the river is shallow, stony and at this time blocked by fallen trees.

I got past the trees above and below the water, and found some more fishermen.

There is a dam above this point that raises the water level for small lake at Luddams Ford Park.

Water today was warm for the season, too early for the black flies. Altogether a very pleasant day.

If you have a new camera and your wife refuses to smile again…

Go to the Old Washington Street Bridge between Hanover and Pembroke there are some lovely views of the river with no danger of getting your feet wet.

This is the point at which the river narrows and beyond which most day-trippers in powerboats turn back. At low tide you could wade across ankle deep, if you can keep your feet against the strong flow as the upper marshes empty through this point.

Whoops! There goes another one of those elusive Blue Heron again.

Bye!
