BOSTON (AP) — Boston’s made history by having the snowiest, and probably most miserable, season since 1872.

The official measurement of 108.6 inches at Logan International Airport Sunday night topped a season record of 107.6 inches set in 1995-96, according to the National Weather Service in Taunton, Massachusetts.

“Superbowls, World Series’, Stanley Cups, and snowfall records,” Mayor Martin J. Walsh tweeted. “We are truly a title city. There will be no parade.”

The final 2.9 inches came after a record-setting monthly snowfall of 64.9 inches in February.

Well Shit, now that we have the damn record can we get on with Spring?  Please?

When people who don’t run a business can tell those who do…

Restaurants in Seattle Going Dark as $15 an Hour Minimum Wage Looms

A January 2015 working paper by two economists, Robert Pollin and Jeanette Wicks-Lim at the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, claims that raising the minimum wage of fast food workers to $15 per hour .. would not necessarily result in “shedding jobs.”..

They further claim that a $15/hour minimum wage would not result in lower profits or the reallocation of funds away from other operations, such as marketing.

Really?  And the Titanic was unsinkable.  Proving something on paper with nothing of value at stake is not the same as risking your savings, labor and reputation by actually opening and running a restaurant or other business.   Once, just once, I’d like to see these ivory tower asshats prove their assertions by putting up their own money to open and run a business.  That did happen to the liberal politician George McGovern, A Politician’s Dream Is a Businessman’s Nightmare .

This column written by Mr. McGovern details his shock at the effects of the laws he helped write when he purchased an Inn and tried running that business under the those laws and regulations enacted by Federal agencies that he helped build.

“Washington Restaurant Association’s Anthony Anton puts it this way: “It’s not a political problem; it’s a math problem.”

“He estimates that a common budget breakdown among sustaining Seattle restaurants so far has been the following: 36 percent of funds are devoted to labor, 30 percent to food costs and 30 percent go to everything else (all other operational costs). The remaining 4 percent has been the profit margin, and as a result, in a $700,000 restaurant, he estimates that the average restauranteur in Seattle has been making $28,000 a year.

“With the minimum wage spike, however, he says that if restaurant owners made no changes, the labor cost in quick service restaurants would rise to 42 percent and in full service restaurants to 47 percent.”

But why would the Seattle politicians do this if it is going to negatively effect so many of the small business owners in their district?   The reason for that is (again) the Unions.  So many of the labor agreements and contracts that they have managed to get written have clauses that automatically increase the wages of the union laborers a set percentage point above the local minimum wage.  Then the other union trades and classifications are set to rise to a higher level above the level below them.  So a cascade of hourly rate increases flow to the unions and a percentage of that will always find it’s way into the pockets of the politicians that started the progression.  Many of the actual poor fools that can only make the minimum wage will lose their jobs when the place they were working at either reduces headcount or closes their doors.  But neither the politicians or the unions give a damn about that.   Surprisingly?

American Millennials are among the world’s least skilled

Surprised?

Surprised? So were the researchers who tested and compared workers in 23 countries.

We hear about the superior tech savvy of people born after 1980 so often that we tend to assume it must be true. But is it?

Researchers at Princeton-based Educational Testing Service (ETS) expected it to be when they administered a test called the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). Sponsored by the OECD, the test was designed to measure the job skills of adults, aged 16 to 65, in 23 countries.

When the results were analyzed by age group and nationality, ETS got a shock. It turns out, says a new report, that Millennials in the U.S. fall short when it comes to the skills employers want most: literacy (including the ability to follow simple instructions), practical math, and — hold on to your hat — a category called “problem-solving in technology-rich environments.”

Not only do Gen Y Americans lag far behind their overseas peers by every measure, but they even score lower than other age groups of Americans.

No, not surprised.  I’ve met them.  It’s why on some blogs comment pages I’ve started listing my age at the end of my comment.  Those also listing their age who think the same way about politics and society are at least in their forties.  Those who either don’t have a clue what I’m talking about or tell me I’m full of poo are in their twenties or thirties.   It is the primary reason I despair  about the future of my country.  (Did I just say that anyone who doesn’t think and say the same things as I do is stupid?  Yeah, probably.)

Seen this video?

It’s a comedy, but it’s not a joke.

“We really thought [U.S.] Millennials would do better than the general adult population, either compared to older coworkers in the U.S. or to the same age group in other countries,” says Madeline Goodman, an ETS researcher who worked on the study. “But they didn’t. In fact, their scores were abysmal.”

In other words, they are stupid.  Young, good looking, nice clothes and expensive toys that Daddy paid for: but stupid. This is John, age 64.

Can we send a Drone after a Robo Caller?

Ending the robocalls

Demand the major telephone companies block robocalls before they get to you, and learn what you can do in the meantime to stop these maddening calls.

This from Consumers Union.  They have been known to commit a bit of the nasty themselves.  In this though they have (finally) brought up a point I’ve strained to get across myself.

How does call-blocking work?

The technology uses computer programs to check and block incoming phone numbers against a list of confirmed spammers, or it requires callers to confirm they are humans before giving you the choice to connect the call.

I used to do the (Telecom) software programming for many commercial companies to permit individuals and departments to change the outgoing caller-ID digits attached to their calls.  They had perfectly good reasons to do so; substituting the main company number for individual internal phone extensions, Department numbers to display for callback instead of lines going to individual agents who might not be working when the client called back.   Reasonable.

Substituting your mothers home number into the caller ID so you would answer the call is not reasonable.   Or nice. This is the basis of “Swatting”

Here’s the point to remember and the basis of CU’s petition, the setup of any voice call requires that the company you are using to make that call must first receive and interpret the numbers you send them to correctly route the call, they attach coding that allows the call to be billed and they provide the caller ID information.  In the case of Verizon and a home line, that information is going to be the name they list the phone number under and the complete phone number.  No Substitutions.  Spammers that use digital or VoIP service to insert the false digits into the caller ID field of the call data.  In this the CU is not going after the right target, it is the miss-match between the originating caller and the Caller ID that is where the problem is.   To get around CU’s petition target of blocking lists of known spammers, the spammers would jump to new numbers.  It is easy (though more expensive) to buy very large blocks of numbers. Or they would steal the existing numbers of valid firms or utilities.  (They are dishonest, remember?)

Now, a company like Verizon could (if they were interested in fixing the problem) easily compare the call routing, billing and Caller ID data in software and block any calls there that data didn’t match up.  They could do it in software and once that “patch” was written it wouldn’t cost them a dime.  Companies that have a valid reason to manipulate the Caller ID field would register those changes and could continue operating as before.  Some of their vendors Telecom Engineers might get some extra work but that’s not a bad thing.  (I’m not free but I’m available!)

Perhaps Verizon would like to get back some of that revenue they lost when people like me looked at the wave of bogus calls on my Caller ID and dropped the service.  It might slow down the momentum of losing home/land lines.

What Ice Age?

BOSTON (CBS) – The historic winter of 2015 has left giant chunks of ice on the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Cape Cod photographer Dapixara captured images of a person standing next to the massive pieces of ice that washed ashore in Wellfleet over the past few days.

WBZ-TV Chief Meteorologist Eric Fisher says this could be a “once-in-a-generation” event due to the extraordinary amount of ice on the Massachusetts Bay. Fisher says the ice won’t be around for long.

There have been several remarkable images left from the record-setting winter, including the nearly frozen waves captured off the coast of Nantucket last month.

Do you remember this last year about Lake Superior and ice still covering the lake in late May.lake_superior_memorial_day_iceI think we all could use a little Global Warming around now.  By the way, Cape Cod was formed by the last Ice Age and now…  Is Daddy coming?

I thought it, Cruz says it. Point goes to Cruz.

Cruz: Menendez probe politically motivated

Des Moines, Iowa — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) suggested Saturday that the Justice Department’s criminal corruption charges against Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) are political retribution against the New Jersey Democrat for opposing the White House’s negotiations with Iran.
Cruz made the allegations to a throng of reporters jammed into the corner of a tent outside the Iowa Ag Summit in Des Moines without even having been asked about the Menendez criminal charges.
“The announcement this week by the Justice Department that they were bringing charges against Bob Menendez — I will point out that the timing seems awfully coincidental that … in the very week that Bob Menendez showed incredible courage to speak out and call out President Obama for the damage that his policy is doing to our national security … the Justice Department announces they’re moving forward with the criminal prosecution,” Cruz said.
“It raises the suggestion to other Democrats that if you dare part from the Obama White House, that criminal prosecutions will be used potentially as a political weapon against you as well,” he added.

And since (as we know) all Democrats are criminal, that gives Obama a very effective whip to keep them in line.

Circulating among the Senior Set

I got on a list from a Senior Group, they email each other with cute pictures and amusing stories or jokes.   I don’t remember getting a “Joke” before this sharp and pointed at President TelePrompter.

Bruce Jenner Transition Fires New Speculation

Wash. DC – Over the past year a rash of news stories surfaced speculating whether gold-medal winning Olympic decathlete Bruce Jenner was undergoing a gender transition from male to female. Though Jenner has yet to publicly confirm the story, members of his extended family, including the Kardashian clan, have recently approached various news outlets confirming Jenner’s intentions.

Now it appears a number of world leaders have picked up on the story and are wondering aloud “What will happen to Jenner’s balls if he completes the transition?” Sources this week quoted Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu as suggesting it would be a monumental step if Jenner were to donate his balls to U.S. President Barack Obama. Netanyahu stated “Everyone knows Obama has no balls and it would be damn nice if he suddenly had Olympic sized balls. It would be a huge step forward for world peace.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel remarked ” I don’t even have any balls, but everyone tells me I have a bigger set than Obama. I think it would be a great idea.”

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin joined Syrian President Bashar Assad in proclaiming that Obama’s lack of balls has finally enabled a number of regimes worldwide a fair chance to consolidate their power. Putin, on a shirtless fly fishing expedition in Kamchatka, said “The days of U.S. Presidents with big balls like Reagan are over. Now it’s our turn.“

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani remarked earlier in the week that “It’s been great the last six years. It’s like playing soccer against the U.S. with no goalie in their net ”

While world leaders debate the issue, closer to home New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Super Bowl MVP quarterback Tom Brady stepped forward to say they would each donate one ball to the President if Jenner does not come through. Belichick, however, cautioned that “The President would have to understand, our balls would be underinflated, but still probably an improvement over what he seems to be working with.”

Ouch!
