‘This time I’m scared’: experts fear too late for China virus lockdown

China’s bid to contain a deadly new virus by placing cities of millions under quarantine is an unprecedented undertaking but it is unlikely to stop the disease spreading, experts warn.

The contagious virus has already reached elsewhere in China and abroad, and even an authoritarian government has only a small timeframe in which trapped residents will submit to such a lockdown, they say.

“I think we have passed the golden period of control and prevention,” said Guan Yi, an expert on viruses at Hong Kong University.

Plus: A scientist at Johns Hopkins last year modeled what would happen if a deadly coronavirus reached a pandemic scale. His simulated scenario predicted that 65 million people could die within 18 months.

The Chinese New Year is this weekend, how many of the celebrants have traveled to destinations outside of China, before the lock-downs and airport screenings started?

My rough estimate of the numbers of cases and the resulting fatalities indicate a 10-15% death rate.  Presumably less in countries with better health care systems, i.e. The USA.

Might want to think twice about accepting an invitation to any Chinese New Year parties this weekend.  Hopefully this is another “Swine Flu” scare, but only time will tell.

West Virginia looking absorb the 2nd Amendment countries of Virginia into itself.

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 8

(By Delegates Howell, Summers, Shott, Householder, C. Martin, Hott, Graves, Cadle, Barnhart, J. Jeffries, Maynard, Phillips, Foster, Hamrick, Steele, D. Jeffries, Wilson, Waxman, Bartlett, Paynter and Linville)

Whereas, In recent days, these tensions have been compounded by a perception of contempt on the part of the government at Richmond for the differences in certain fundamental political and societal principles which prevail between the varied counties and cities of that Commonwealth; and

Whereas, In the latest, and most evident, in this string of grievances, the government at Richmond now seeks to place intolerable restraints upon the rights guaranteed under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution to the citizens of that Commonwealth; and

Whereas, The Legislative body of West Virginia believes that this latest action defies the wise counsel which has come down to us in the august words of our common Virginia Founders: as the government at Richmond now repudiates the counsel of that tribune of liberty, Patrick Henry-who stated to the Virginia Ratifying Convention in 1788 that “The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun”;

‘Outlet challenge’ prompts safety warnings from fire investigators

Fire investigators in Massachusetts are hoping to help pull the plug on a new viral “challenge” that may be redefining the word “stupid.”

It’s called the “outlet challenge.” Participants insert the plug part of a phone-charger cord only part of the way in, then try to produce a spark by touching a penny to the exposed prongs.

The challenge has been linked to scorchings of outlets in Holden and Plymouth as well as a fire at Westford Academy, where one student is facing criminal charges, Boston’s WBZ-TV reported. Officials are also warning of the possibility of death by electrocution.

A photo released by the Plymouth Fire Department showed a penny and a phone-charger plug singed and fused together after a recent incident.

I took several courses called “Power and Grounding” during my career, safety around electrical equipment and circuits was always included.   One point that was made very clear was how little current was needed to kill a person.  As the fragment from a safety handbook shows, a tenth of an Amp is all that needed.   There are fifteen hundred times that much current in the common wall socket.  Having been “bitten” by electricity a few times I can confirm that, yes, it will hurt!

“In general, for limb-contact electrical shocks, accepted rules of thumb are: 1-5 mA is the level of perception; 10 mA is the level where pain is sensed; at 100 mA severe muscular contraction occurs, and at 100-300 mA electrocution occurs.” 0.1–0.3 A

Mysterious burst of gravitational waves hit Earth, baffling astronomers

Christopher Carbone

A mysterious deep space event could have stretched and squeezed Earth last week.

Astronomers observed a split-second burst of gravitational waves on Jan. 14, but they can’t figure out precisely where the burst came from.

These waves are disturbances in space-time that are generally caused by accelerated masses, such as black holes or neutron stars, colliding with each other.

However, astronomers are unsure because this particular burst didn’t last very long. In addition, gravitational waves usually change in frequency over time, Andy Howell, a scientist at Los Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network, told Live Science.

The burst still “seems a little too short for what we expect from the collapse of a massive star,” he said. “On the other hand, we’ve never seen a star blowing up in gravitational waves before, so we don’t really know what it would look like.”

The scientist, who is also an adjunct faculty member in physics at the University of California Santa Barbara, suggested that the burst could be from two intermediate-mass black holes having merged.

Researchers are now pointing their telescopes to that same region to pinpoint the wave’s source.

“The universe always surprises us,” Howell added. “There could be totally new astronomical events out there that produce gravitational waves that we haven’t really thought about.”
