Influenza.

Well, the one nice thing is that I think that the worst day of 2019 is already behind me. The reason is I just got out of the hospital, for the Flu. Or The Influenza for the purists.

I think it’s worth mentioning a few things I’ve learned from this. First, I had the flu shot. And that bromine that taking the flu shot makes the illness less severe if you get it is very suspect to me now, if the case I had had been any worse I might not be here. There’s been stories in the news lately that the flu season is ‘lighter’ this year, maybe. But as I lay in emergency on a gurney for hours, what I heard left, right and behind me were people hacking their lungs out, just like me. Today, as I checked out of the hospital, I looked at the board showing room status and 11 of 20 rooms were marked the same as mine, Influenza.

As for the other news reports I read regarding the flu vaccine, after last years ‘poor performance’, the CDC was proud to report that this years vaccine was ‘Very Effective’. Well, as to that, more than half the nurses (including the xray tech) I was in contact with mentioned sympathetically “I know how you feel, I’m getting over the flu myself”.  All the nurses I met were great, just terrific, and I want to thank them all again. And in my State, it’s mandated that they all get the flu shot. Only one of the other people in the ER there for the flu said they hadn’t gotten the shot.

So that is the one point that made me write this, if anyone thinks that because they got the flu shot they have a good level of protection… don’t.

And over $10 a pill for Tamiful? What’s up with that? At least the antibiotics for  the pneumonia are still cheap.

And thanks to my girlfriend for her support.

Sorry you got sick. I turn down the flu shot every year when it is offered to me, and every year when I decline the medical professional doing the offering (my PCP or a nurse) just shrugs their shoulders and says something along the lines of ‘I don’t blame you a bit’. Knock on wood, I’ve dodged that bullet every year. Hope you recover quickly.
