Staring at the end of Summer.

‘Green’ Industry wouldn’t exist or survive without the Coal, Oil, and Gas industries.

The CAT 994 – Not Exactly a GREEN MACHINE

The Cat 994K Wheel Loader meets your demand for greater productivity by delivering more: More payload. More power. More performance. And more profitability. The 994K builds on the 25-year history of the 994 model and combines it with your input to deliver a bigger, better machine. We made the 994K larger — increasing payload up to 30%. We improved the engine to make it more powerful and efficient. We made it more comfortable and quieter, improved visibility and made it safer for your operators. New serviceability features and a modular design make it more serviceable, and high-strength structures and axles make it more reliable, durable, and longer-lasting. The 994K is built to load more material for a more productive operation and a better bottom line.

This machine is required to move 500 tons of earth/ore which will be refined into one lithium car battery.

It burns 900-1000 gallons of fuel in a 12-hour shift.

Lithium is refined from ore using sulfuric acid. The proposed lithium mine at Thacker Pass is estimated to require up to 75 semi loads of sulfuric acid a day. The (used) acid does not turn into unicorn food like AOC believes.

A battery in an electric car, let’s say an average Tesla, is made of 25 pounds of lithium, 60 pounds of nickel, 44 pounds of manganese, 30 pounds of cobalt, 200 pounds of copper, and 400 pounds of aluminum, steel, and plastic, etc., averaging 750-1,000 pounds of minerals, that had to be mined and processed into a battery that merely stores electricity.

Electricity is generated by oil, gas, coal, or water (and a tiny fraction of wind and solar). That is the truth, about the lie, of “green” energy. There’s nothing green about the green new deal.

$29,000 to replace EV’s battery, and that’s just the latest problem.

First note the mileage, 70K.

To drive 70K in my Camry would, at today’s Biden gasoline prices, cost me $10,700.

And my Camry is larger, more comfortable, and has more cargo space.

Now at the current cost per kWh from my latest bill the additional cost of the electricity to drive 70K miles is $5,460. Again the EV is a smaller car with much less cargo space.  This model is also a hybrid so that would be travelling on plug-in power only.

So to drive those 70k miles in ten years the owner used up a $29,800 battery pack and at least an additional $5,460 +:  Or $35,300.   By the way, the gas tank on my Camry is doing just fine, at 97K miles.

But to get the model year of the car I used the VIN printed on the bill to look up the service history.

https://www.chevyvindecoder.com/VOLT/2012/1G1RB6E4XCU113962/

The first entry in the service history for the car was in 2012:

DRIVER HAD RETURNED HOME, STOPPED CAR, DEPRESSED GEAR SHIFTER BUTTON TO PUT GEAR IN PARK, AND WAS ELECTROCUTED FROM THE POINT OF GEAR SHIFTER.

Not fatally.   But also not the last time the car tried to kill him. Read the whole thing.

The battery pack on a Hybrid is naturally smaller (and less expensive to replace?) than the battery pack on a full EV.   Food for thought.

Europe misses Donald Trump.

French Electricity Price Exceeds 1,000 Euros for First Time

The French year-ahead contract rose as much as 25% to 1,130 euros a megawatt-hour on the European Energy Exchange AG Friday. The German equivalent also gained to a record, rising as much as 33% to 995 euros a megawatt-hour for a gain of about 70% this week. In oil market terms, it’s the equivalent of over $1,600 a barrel.

Wow!  And to think I felt bad about my electric bill of 26 cents a kWh.  The French will be paying $1.13 kWh!

At the same time shortages will mean NO natural gas for heating, at any price!

Well, Frack Me!

… and don’t forget about the rising price of home heating oil!

Texas roundup.

Texas gives this to the illegals to sign before they pack ’em on the buses.

I wonder if they had the cows hoof-print this on the cattle drives.

“Ale vs Stout” weekend is here.

It’s a sure sign that the summer is drawing to a close; this weekend is for many college students the date that they quit their summer job and head back to school.

We were on Cape Cod one summer at the end of August.  Back then I was drinking beer (and it’s heavier cousins).  From the short list of brews on tap there was one brand I liked, a stout.  I ordered it from the menu.  What arrived at the table was a golden hued liquid and a sip indicated that it was in fact an ale.

Catching the harried waitress as she passed by, I told her I had not received the stout I asked for.   She told me “Oh no, that is the stout”,  I prepared to strongly disagree.   My girlfriend interceded and nicely suggested that the waitress check with someone at the bar.   A while later, the manager came by with my stout, nicely cold, dark and foamy.   He apologized and explained that all his experienced summer help,  all college students, had left on Friday to head back to school.   He said that every summer he dreaded this weekend because the smooth running operation that he had built fell apart as he tried to find warm bodies to fill the gap until after Labor Day and the crowds stopped coming, when he could get by with his few permanent employees.

So I made a notation on my calendar, annually, to recognize the start of the period when I needed to keep my patience in hand and expectations low until after Labor Day.

I named this period, “Ale vs Stout” weekend.   So join me in throttling back your expectations of timely service and cultivate patience for incorrect food orders (dressing on the salad instead of on the side,  fried not grilled and Ale instead of Stout.) or receiving the wrong brew.

I’ll be the guy ordering the unsweetened Ice Tea.

Annual repost.
