RMV gives alien a license to …?

Driver’s licenses, we don’t need no stinkin’ driver’s licenses.

But I still can’t figure out how Uncle Omar, the president’s uncle, an illegal alien for literally decades, now an admitted drunken driver, gets his license back…

I’ve asked the Registry a lot of questions, but it’s like nailing Jell-O to a wall.

The Registry continued, “Massachusetts does not have a legal presence requirement.”…

A legal presence requirement? Is that anything like an “undocumented worker”? This is a new euphemism for illegal alien. Odd, however, that according to the Registry, “Massachusetts has a residency requirement. Applicants need to prove that they live at an address in the commonwealth.”…

So let me see if I have this straight. To get a driver’s license, you have to have a legal residence in Massachusetts … but not in the U.S. Right?…

But I still don’t understand how an illegal who’s admitted to OUI gets his license back in a week. Who does he think he is, a judge?

I just hope if I ever lose my license, they’ll give me a “Cinderella,” also known as an “Omar license.”…

Paul Ryan’s Hunger Games

The President offers his vision for an uplifting second term.

The list of untrue things that Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe is evidently so long that Mr. Obama associated himself with Republicans, albeit mostly dead Republicans like Lincoln and Eisenhower. For the first time we can recall, Mr. Obama even praised George W. Bush, of all people, because his predecessor created a new entitlement for prescription drugs. He also said Newt Gingrich showed how smart he was when he called Mr. Ryan’s budget “radical” and “right-wing social engineering” last year.

All of this is a political fable carefully constructed to erase the record of the last three years and blame every current anxiety on a GOP House that has been in office for all of 14 months. The President claims to have “eliminated dozens of programs that weren’t working,” but the savings from these eliminations amount to less than 0.1% of the budget, or less than $100 million…

…Now he claims Mr. Ryan’s reforms are “antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity and upward mobility.” But it is more accurate to say that Mr. Obama is the one who is out of step with a bipartisan consensus that entitlement reform is essential to prevent a debt crisis. Doug : Linear Thinking in the Environmental Sciences: The Fundamental Flaw

This from a colleague

Doug

The fundamental flaw in linear thinking, as it is commonly applied in the environmental sciences’ is this:

No matter which direction one follows on an unlimited straight line, it inevitably leads one to apocalyptic conditions, e.g. the zero-threshold concept gives us “magic” cancers at miniscule, ineffectual doses, while “Global Warming” leads inexorably to planetary meltdown.

In reality, however, all natural systems are generally obliged to fluctuate within normal limits that are imposed by negative feedback mechanisms. Positive feedbacks do, of course, exist. However, only in the event of total system failure, which characterizes the deaths of stars & living organisms, do positive feedbacks run amok, unchecked by negative feedbacks.

All of which raises the question: “Why are the obvious logical flaws of undisciplined linear extrapolation tolerated in the environmental sciences, & can the problem be “fixed.”

“Why?” is a question that could be answered, but not without getting this author into way too much trouble. As to how the problem can be “fixed”: That depends entirely on whether the problem is (1) the unintentional result of a misguided, but genuine, concern for the health of humans & other natural systems (in which case the problem can be fixed), or (2) the intentional result of a cynical political agenda governed by the need to “keep the fear alive” (in which case, the problem cannot be fixed). Unless you’re a cat, you probably don’t have enough lives to give this issue the attention it deserves. In the meantime, just in case, we could try honest & accurate risk communication, and see if it has any impact. Or, maybe not.

Herr Doktor Schnell

Volume 2 of “Herr Doktor Schnell’s heretical thoughts & Pithy Remarks.”

Consensus vs. Science

If you want the answer to a question, you can 1) blindly accept the dictates of the authority of your choice, 2) embrace what someone else tells you is the “consensus” opinion, 3) hop on the bandwagon of a charismatic iconoclast, or 4) trust your own intellect, critically weigh the available evidence, and decide for yourself.

The problem with the first option is that, no matter how famous, big and powerful authorities are, they can still be wrong, especially if the authority in question is pontificating outside its area of expertise and/or making arguments based less on fact than on ideology and emotion.

Also, the larger and more powerful the “authority” is, the easier it is for it to be wrong, but force compliance with its views, anyway, thereby appearing “right”. (Witness the Roman Inquisition versus Giordano Bruno (burned at the stake) and Galileo Galilei (sentenced to house arrest for life) in the early 17th century.) Nor is it always easy to distinguish Sense from Nonsense based solely on an organization’s description of itself, because everybody, without exception, applies the same universally recognized “good” descriptors to themselves.

For example, the avowed aim of the Flat Earth Society is “to carefully observe, think freely, rediscover forgotten fact, and oppose theoretical dogmatic assumptions.” (If you ever hear an organization state that its official mission is to spread misinformation, defraud the public, and victimize widows and orphans, then it’s safe to assume that Hell has, indeed, finally frozen over.)

The problem with option #2 is that, historically, consensus opinion actually has been wrong, more often than not. That’s why scientific progress has always depended on the confirmation of individual discoveries, rather than on the outcome of a majority vote on controversial issues. It is also why people with bizarre, counter-intuitive ideas often compare themselves to Galileo, or some other famous dissident, implying that their non-mainstream status is actually an argument in favor of their theory. (It’s sort of like running for President and claiming to be a Washington outsider.)

Which brings us to option #3 (hopping on the bandwagon of a charismatic iconoclast). Unfortunately, coloring outside the lines does not automatically make one an artist, any more than coloring inside the lines does. A thousand year ago, everyone “knew” the Earth was flat. (And, the afore-mentioned Flat Earth Society still does.) A few people disagreed, however. And they were right. In the twentieth century, it was the consensus of nuclear physicists that cold fusion was impossible. But, in 1989, two electrochemists disagreed. And, they were wrong. The problem with the last option (trusting your own intellect, critically weigh the available evidence, and deciding for yourself) is that it requires effort, and that effort could prove both time-consuming and mentally taxing.

In the middle Ages, ordinary people didn’t have to worry about this, because books were generally unavailable, so personal research wasn’t even an option for the general public. But, now, we have public libraries and the internet. “Still,” one might say, “Public libraries and (especially) the World Wide Web contain a lot more inaccurate information than they do accurate information. How can I be expected to tell which is which? I’m not an expert.”

Which is why option #4 requires effort and could even prove time-consuming and mentally taxing. Fortunately, there are always talented writers out there who understand the problem, can explain it well to novices, and even provide credible documentation for those who want to explore the issue further. Granted, many “experts” claim that their field is just too complicated to explain to outsiders. But, that is not so much a comment on the difficulty of their subject matter as it is an admission of their inadequacies as communicators. Besides, the questions that most often pique the interest of non-academics tend to be, not the abstract, arcane ones (like quantum physics) but the more concrete ones with practical implications (like environmental issues). And, if you can’t find an expert on such a topic who has the ability to explain it clearly to the average high school student, then you just aren’t looking hard enough. The resources are, in fact, out there, and they are readily available. It’s just a matter of being curious enough to seek them out, and confident enough in your own intelligence to independently evaluate them.

Fly me to the moon to have eel, Eh?

Flying car?

Last month, it flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes.

Of course, if the NSC/EPA mandated safety and emissions hardware was backed out of the design then…TO THE MOON, ALICE! To the Moon!!!

I guarantee that the above picture has nothing at all to do with Tom & Ray’s column.

Eel market sizzles as prices hit $2k/lb in Maine

Did you say $2000 an pound?!!

But there’s no mystery about what’s drawing hundreds of fishermen to riverbanks to catch the creatures during the two-month fishing season. The price of the eels has skyrocketed to unparalleled levels, with catches bringing up to $2,000 a pound.

A worldwide shortage of the prized dinner fare, imported in infancy from Maine to Asia to be raised in farm ponds, has buyers paying top dollar for the baby American eels. A pound of eels should be worth around $30,000 on the open market once grown to market size, according to one dealer.

What is being caught isn’t adult, pop in the skillet, eels. It’s the viable hatchlings, toothpick size. A whole new meaning to “worth their weight in gold”.

Obama’s uncle gets Massachusetts driver’s license back after drunken driving arrest

President Obama’s uncle has reportedly been granted a hardship driver’s license by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles just a week after he lost the right to drive for 45 days in a deal in a drunken driving case.

Oh for crying out loud! Here’s a thought, ship his ass back to the family U.N. hut in Kenya, then he won’t need a Mass Drivers License. What’s next?

Digitally converted by Hollywood.

Digital technology puts South Shore cinemas at risk of vanishing

Small theaters’ fade-out?

The clock is ticking as the movie industry – filmmakers, studios and distributors – push to abandon 35-millimeter film and commit to the digital format, which is much cheaper to ship. (And easier to defend against piracy)

“We estimate the major studios will stop distributing film in the U.S. sometime in 2013,” said Patrick Corcoran, a spokesman for the National Association of Theater Owners in Washington, D.C.

Virtual Print Fees, paid by movie studios to help defray the cost of digital projection, favors theaters that show the most first-run movies.

“I believe that many more small theaters will be forced to close their doors when film disappears,” Hardy said. “Our hope is that our clientele will support the theaters, realizing that if they don’t, our low-key neighborhood cinemas may not survive.”

AS a rule I don’t parrot the Occupy morons line that everything is the result of greed, but in this case I’m sorely tempted. How much can the costs be, to continue producing the same product that they have been manufacturing for over a century? The above article from the Quincy Patriot Ledger sets out a figure of $75,000 to $100,000 a screen for conversion to digital projection. Per Screen.  (That cost seem a little high to you? You don’t suppose thats because there is perceived, mandated deadline that gives the makers of Digital Projectors little incentive to reduce costs or prices?)

This story in the Ledger only discusses the costs and effect on small, commercial theaters. Lets include high schools, colleges, churches, town halls, libraries, and that’s just off the top on my head. (Oh, look I found my hat)   Many Hollywood films, some large, some small are shown in all those locales. Sometimes for charity, many times for educational purposes and often as fundraisers. Apology

Parents of murdered British students criticise Barack Obama

The parents of two British students murdered in Florida have criticised President Barack Obama for his lack of compassion over their sons’ deaths.

His failure to respond to three letters sent to the White House was because there was no “political value” and not worthy of a few minutes of his time.

They spoke out as teenager Shawn Tyson began a life sentence after being found guilty of the murder of James Cooper and James Kouzaris last April.

The 17 year old, who shot the men as they begged for their lives, will die in prison.

Well, I apologize to their family and friends for the cesspool we are rapidly making of this country and for the packs of wild children and young men who have been allowed to grow up, or move here, who do not process the slightest shred of decency or civilization.

I apologize that instead of curbing these lawless jackals, we punish those who defend themselves against them. We even allow those few who witness and report the truth to be threatened and insulted, put in fear of their lives and property.

I apologize that we have become a nation of fools who have elevated a prince of fools above us. We deserve your scorn.

Put it to bed

The Trayvon Timeline: How Local Crime Story Became National Racial Outrage

March 12, Al Sharpton’s National Action Network issued a statement in which Sharpton called for a “complete and thorough investigation” into Martin’s death. He added: “[W]e are told that racial language was used when the young man reported his suspicions to police,” a misleading claim later disproved by transcripts of the 911 call, in which race was first raised in a question by the dispatcher, not by Zimmerman himself.

Once again, its time for this blog to leave a story behind. You get tired of the lies from the left and disgusted with the biased coverage from the MSM. I hope Mr. Zimmerman still has a life left after this farce spits him out.

So one last question, if Mr. Zimmerman had not been legally carrying a handgun for protection, would he be alive today? Or would he still be on that sidewalk with the back of his head strove in? Continue reading

All pearls belong to the King.

Job Killers

By John Stossel

…In Virginia, Greg Garrett started farming oysters. His neighborhood is zoned for livestock. He could raise buffalo, but local bureaucrats decreed that he could not sell oysters. Why not? My staff talked to the zoning official, and we still have no clue. That’s the case with a lot of American law. It’s arbitrary power. Regulations are so numerous and complex that no one really understands them. This diminishes our ability to flourish.

Big government makes us all small.

It Doesn’t Matter If You’re Black or White

In the Chicago Tribune, Obama’s hometown paper, its columnist, Leonard Pitts Jr, insists that George Zimmerman is white because race is a construct and whiteness is not color, but privilege, making it completely indistinguishable from class. To indict Zimmerman, who is Hispanic and part of a multi-racial family structure, as a white racist, Pitts is forced to argue that race isn’t race. Anyone who is of the “oppressed of the earth” is really black and anyone who is privileged is white.

IDF Cancelling All Passover Leaves

Some thing’s up.  Chief of Staff Benny Gantz has done something that hasn’t been done in many years.  He has cancelled ALL leaves for Passover.

Every military man will tell you that if you want rumors to run rampant you cancel all leaves.

If they are going after Iran, I wish them Bon Chance and A Safe Return Home.

Trayvon Martin: Second Eye Witness Saw Zimmerman on Ground Moaning Crying for Help – Zimmerman: Martin Tried to Take His Gun

Gee, why does the Left suddenly want us to stop covering the Trayvon Martin story?

Isn’t it going the way they wanted it to?

And how do you like this graphic from The Southern Poverty Law Foundation?

DeMarco Harris (another angelic and innocent young boy) is in Juvie for murdering the 23 year old white girl (Trisha Babcock) seen in the image behind him. A victim of “White Justice”.

Don’t ask me what the hell this graphic is supposed to mean, or  what “Reparations Protest” is about.

What I’m afraid it means is that we have lost an entire generation of young black men in certain parts of this country. They have become warped beyond all reason or redemption.
