Firewood Thieves, Oh, No! Revisited.

Seems that this winter is shaping up to be even worse than last year (God help us!)  So I’m revisiting that post.

Thieves Raiding Residents' Woodpiles For Firewood...

woodpileIn some areas  a crime not seen since the Depression.

In the linked story, someone took a families entire winter fuel supply, several cords of split, seasoned hardwood.  They have no backup, no oil furnace, no gas and yes, they have children.

In the Depression some farmers found a solution to the thefts. All farms had a supply of dynamite; for stumps, or the ubiquitous stones in the fields.  Drilling out a small hole and sticking half or quarter stick of dynamite inside a piece of firewood and leaving it on top of the pile, soon lead to the identification of the location of the thief.  Harsh, but locally highly approved of.

The gravity of this type of offense is that it breaks down the trust in a community; to steal a families source of winter fuel, to steal the tools of a man’s livelihood, destroy crops in the field, befoul a common resource as in a well, or to set a fire in the night.  Today, some of these things aren’t even felonies.

I’ve had experience with losing more than I could afford to lose.  When I was starting out in telecom, installing “Key” phone systems in the seventies, I worked hard all day and into the evening to finish the work by the promised time.  The job was on the Cape and the drive home long. It was dark and late when I finally parked in front of my apartment. To tired to unload and carry my tools up the three floors, I dragged myself up to get a few hours sleep before getting up and going to the office.  In the morning when I went down, the car was gone.  It turned up the next day, towed by the police to the municipal lot.  Side window broken out and empty.  For the next couple of months I was back doing grunt work, pulling cable, labeling phones. No overtime, no travel pay. Until I could put together another tool kit and paid back the company for the lost test-set and meter.  I also lost out on an promotion and advance to a higher pay scale.  That whole incident put me back a year.   I hate thieves.  If they knew what affect they had on their victims, they wouldn’t care.

Well, back to woodpiles.

Let me share some whimsical photos of woodpiles…

Concerning the likelihood of a very bad winter, the following story has food for thought.

Seems that a tribe of Indians living in the Northwest was concerned about the upcoming winter.

So one of the Indians called the National Weather Service said, “We’re worried that it might be a bad winter. What’s your forecast?”

The weather service meteorologist responded, “We predict a very cold winter.”

The Indian reported this to his tribe, which immediately started stockpiling firewood.

A couple weeks later, the Indian again called the weather service and asked, “Are you changing the forecast for this winter?”

The meteorologist answered, “We think it’s going to be a very harsh, cold winter.”

Again, the Indian reported this to his tribe, which, with even greater urgency, stocked even more firewood.

Even so, a few weeks later, no cold and no snow.

The Indian, wondering where all the snow was, yet again called the weather service and asked, “You keep saying it’s going to be a bad winter. What makes you think it’s going to be so cold?”

The forecaster replied, “I don’t know. But the Indians have been stockpiling firewood like crazy.”

Concealed carry weapons on display at 2014 SHOT Show

From Jan. 14 through 17, more than 60,000 industry professionals convened in Las Vegas for the 36th Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show). It’s the world’s largest gun show, with over 12.5 miles of weapons, and more than 1,600 exhibitors are showcasing their latest and greatest.

And some of what they showed was meant to be hidden.

Revolvers hidden in the handles of briefcases, ladies handbags, going Storm Grey, cutting-edge suppressors — they’re all meant to keep your weapon status on the QT. There were heaps of traditional concealed carry methods at the 2014 SHOT Show, but for those looking for holster-less options, here are a few that had attendees talking.

NOW, That’s a chastity belt!   This blog firmly believes in the principle that a woman explaining to the police how her attacker got three holes, center mass, is preferable to a woman lying in an alley, raped and murdered.

Privilege

“Our President*…………………….

*Date: *January 5, 2014 at 9:37:49 AM PST

My wife and I are on Oahu for our annual Hawaii trip with good friends and two granddaughters enjoying the hospitality of the Hawaiian people on this lovely Island. Being retired military allows us the privilege of using the military facilities and especially the highly desirable golf courses.

Yesterday , Jan 4, we had a tee time of 12:04 to play golf at Kaneohe Marine Corps on Oahu. We arrived early because we were advised the President was possibly going to play but also that he was leaving to fly back to D.C. that same day.

We checked in and were second off and waiting for carts when we were advised that he really may be coming but there was no count of when or how many in the party. We then got body scanned, our golf bags searched and briefed on the proper behavior expected. He and his party finally arrived at 1:00 and he then hit balls on the range and then drove right in front of us on his way to the first tee hollering Happy New Year to the small group (50 or so) golfers waiting to play. They keep two holes clear for him both
front and rear and the secret service used 30 carts in all. After he teed off they went down the first fairway and I spotted a single golfer going to the first tee. I hollered at him to get off and he slowly ambled my way and when within talking distance he said he was White House staff and was allowed within the two hole space. I cannot repeat what I said to him. We were finally allowed to tee off at 1:30 and watched as the President bullied his way thru all the young Marines who were able to take a day off as they prepared to go to wherever to protect us all. No words of thank you for your service or how are you doing, just he and three of his
civilian high school buddies messing up the day for many. They would make the two groups ahead of his progress move to the side and allow the group to play through.

It really is bothersome to view firsthand the egotistic ass that is our President. I asked numerous marines who were standing around what they thought of him and not one of the thirty or so had any kind words. The common refrain was why did he not come out and join a threesome of young marines and play golf with them. That would have been so appropriate. Why doesn’t his staff make a tee time like all of us and cancel if necessary? That would eliminate all the confusion. Why does he not respect the lives of all around him instead of being so arrogant.

Thank God he left last evening. We were out there for 5 1/2 hours and quit after 14 holes and left the course with a total lack of respect for our President.   USMC Friend

Hitler’s Children became judges

Meanwhile, Back in the Fatherland . . .

Things are different in the Fatherland of Germany, where a judge recently ordered that parents may not have custody of their children because “the family might move to another country and homeschool, posing a ‘concrete endangerment’ to the children.”

Got that? Let me repeat it just in case. A German judge took children away from their parents because “the family might move to another country and homeschool, posing a ‘concrete endangerment’ to the children.”

In August, 20 armed police, equipped with a battering ram just in case,  arrived at the door of this Darmstadt family and forcibly took four children, ages 7 to 14.

Was there anything wrong with the children? Nope. The judge — whose name, by the way, is Marcus Malkmus, in case you have a voodoo doll handy or wish to burn him in effigy — the judge admitted that the children were 1) academically proficient and 2) well adjusted socially.

He just didn’t like homeschooling.

Why? Pay attention now: this takes us deep into the heart of a leftist: because he feared that “the children would grow up in a parallel society without having learned to be integrated or to have a dialogue with those who think differently and facing them in the sense of practicing tolerance.”

The invocation of “tolerance” is especially cute, don’t you think?

https://i0.wp.com/www.hslda.org/hs/international/Germany/WunderlichReleased_1-7-2014.jpg

Following 21 days in German state custody, the four Wunderlich children were reunited with their parents, Dirk and Petra, in September. But now a family court judge refuses to return legal custody of the children to the parents

We have those people here in the US too.   They know it’s easier to control a child’s mind when they are young, and after you have imprinted your own definitions of “Right and Wrong” on their young minds, you own them for life.   They are slave-masters. What should be their fate, these radical conformists?

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?… The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

That’s the solution to the challenge of every Police State, don’t co-operate, don’t go quietly, resist.

A Solution to the “Made in America” Dilemma

This article just pisses me off!

The second – which plagues me to this day – is that I didn’t see how the outsourcing and offshoring trend in the technology sector where I spent the ‘80s and ‘90s would ultimately affect our economy.

I wasn’t personally responsible for sending manufacturing jobs overseas, but like many executives, I had myself fooled into believing that America’s future was all about intellectual capital, knowledge workers, and the new economy. We all know how that turned out. We lost our manufacturing muscle and all the jobs that went with it.

As former Intel chairman Andy Grove so aptly put it, “You could say, as many do, that shipping jobs overseas is no big deal because the high-value work — and much of the profits — remain in the U.S. That may well be so. But what kind of a society are we going to have if it consists of highly paid people doing high-value-added work — and masses of unemployed?”

Yes, that’s all correct. But the one thing he left out, who’s going to buy all that high-tech candy if no one has a decent job? I used to make a damn good income (thankfully I put most of it away or I’d be in deep shit now.) and I used to spend freely on clothes, movies, restaurants and travel.  Now, I don’t spend a dime I don’t have to anymore.  And the same is true for a lot of my friends and former co-workers.  Is there any blue collar workers still spending money in this country other than the Union/Government workers?

And that’s the way it remained until four factors began to converge that, together, could bring “Made in America” back in a big way – if we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot and squander the opportunity.

The pendulum swung back to vertical integration. Technology companies from Apple (AAPL) and IBM (IBM) to Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) have seen the light – and the value in controlling virtually ever aspect of their ever-more complex products. Apple, for example, does everything in-house but manufacturing – and it controls that very closely.

China’s bad behavior. From stealing our intellectual property and illegally copying our products to hacking our companies and disrupting our economy, China has managed to flip from an enormous opportunity to an even bigger threat. Granted, it’s both, but the tide has been turning toward the latter for some time.

The backlash against offshore call-centers. Consumers have been repeatedly frustrated and confounded by offshore customer service and technical support agents that are as clueless and useless as they are polite. And that’s come back to haunt companies trying to improve their bottom line by shipping customer support overseas.

A blessing in disguise: the financial crisis. Granted, it would not be my or anyone else’s choice, but the lasting effects of the 2008 financial meltdown – a sluggish economy and high unemployment – have, if nothing else, been a resounding wakeup call to the perilous state of our nation’s job market and manufacturing base.

Two of his examples, China’s bad behavior and Offshore call-centers, directly contributed to my unemployed/forced retirement state.  I built call-centers, for banks, for hospitals, for telemarketers (yes, guilty).   I saw all of them sent to India (previous cute story) or somewhere just as cheap.

Also, I was an expert in Nortel products (formerly Northern Telecomm), over a thirty year period I installed, serviced and programmed Nortel designed phone systems; for Marriott Hotels, Brighams and Women’s Hospital, Liberty Mutual, and Metropolitan, Mass Electric and Gas, plus hundreds of other law firms, car dealerships and anything else you care to name. There was a time when if you were driving on Route 128, the beltway around Boston, and you threw a nickel out the window it would probably hit one of our customers.  Well, the fucking Chinese stole the crown jewels from Nortel (story here) and that along with stunningly bad management quickly killed the company and the market for their products.  (I should have specialized in NEC phone systems, the Japs knew better than to trust the chinks.)

So forgive me if I’m not impressed that this idiot is finally realizing what the consequences of his and other BIG IMPORTANT EXECUTIVES stupid decisions were.  Asshole.
