Ronald Reagan in Tbilisi (repost from 2015)

My cousin is in Georgia (the country, not the state) teaching.  In one of his occasional emails home, laden with comments about the food, the public transport and the friendly pig that follows him around, he wrote about coming across a life sized statue of President Ronald Reagan in a park in Tbilisi. This South Caucasus news story is from Nov 2011.

This year, the world marks the 20th anniversary of the Soviet empire going belly up. No less importantly, on November 23, Georgia will be marking St. George’s Day and the eighth anniversary of the 2003 Rose Revolution. So, what better way to celebrate all three events than to unveil a monument to Ronald Reagan in downtown Tbilisi?

Tbilisi residents strolling in one downtown park will soon find the crusader against the “evil empire” sitting casually on a bench with crossed legs, and gesturing for passers-by to join him for a chat; probably on the ills of Communism or the merits of economic deregulation.

Both topics have many a fan in the Georgian government and sympathetic circles — could we be seeing soon some familiar faces seated alongside the 40th US president?

There is definitely enough room on the bronze bench for enthusiasts to sit down and take photos with the life-size monument, as the pro-government Rustavi2 national broadcaster encouragingly notes. The sculpture is emblazoned with the Reagan-attributed quote “Freedom Is Never More than One Generation Away from Extinction.”

Granted, other ex-Communist countries also have commemorated Reagan, but Georgia clearly has a thing for US presidents, dead or alive.

Travelers arrive and leave eastern Tbilisi via George W. Bush Street, which features the 43rd president waving a hand from a placard to outbound traffic. George W. may have earned the honor largely for swinging by in 2005 to say hi to Georgia as a “beacon of democracy,” in his own words.

To balance out the message-making, though, you might think that Georgia, which counts heavily on diplomatic support from Washington, some day might need a wave from or a chat with a Democratic US president, too. But, as of now, no news about plans for an Obama turnpike or a JFK bust.

reag nov22 pWhat small and petty souls they have.

And here’s Cousin Frank’s photo,  several years later that seat next to The President is certainly worn shiny. Mr. President, do you mind if I sit?

And in great men.

The Washington Post… of course.

Why are Republicans more likely to suffer hearing loss?

Answer, (from the WaPo),  lots of loud noisy machines in the rural areas and … Ta Da! We have and use firearms!   And of course none of us are smart enough to wear and use hearing protection, though they don’t seem to know that such things exist.

Who gets the joke?   …

Tucker interviews Putin.

The entire interview is over two hours long. I haven’t sat through the whole thing yet, may not, but it’s interesting and Putin presents well.

Of the first half hour I’ve watched, I don’t hold the same opinion that Putin expresses on the subjects covered but there was nothing that was completely false. He’s not lying.  I don’t think many American politicians could talk for over half an hour without descending into complete BS.

The money quote…

“… in the war of propaganda it is very hard to beat the United States”

Tucker Carlson in Russia

Tucker Carlson Goes to the Forbidden Zone to Interview Public Enemy #2, Vladimir Putin

I’m not sure what provoked Tucker Carlson to actually follow through on this plan; I know he was deeply worried about being arrested in Russia.  However, Carlson did something every U.S. journalist should do, even though they are forbidden by the State Dept from doing it.

The reason the U.S. Government doesn’t want people traveling into Russia, is specifically because people will tell the experience of their time in Russia, and that will run completely counter to the acceptable narrative.  Tucker Carlson took the chance, and the intelligence apparatus is likely going bananas.

Howie Carr: From the frontline of Massachusetts’ descent into the Third World

“Hotel closed to Public”

Everywhere the motels are being turned over to the state and its “NGO” proxies. They are rebranded, if you will, into flophouses for the “migrants” who are now enjoying permanent all-expenses-paid vacations at the taxpayers’ expense.

The other day, a former radio coworker of mine sent me this photo from the Holiday Inn in Marlboro with its vaguely ominous sign:

“Hotel Closed to Public.”

I tweeted out the photo with a brief explanation of what had happened. I was surprised when the photo got far more clicks than anything I’ve ever posted.

The next day, the “hotel” removed the sign and replaced it with something smaller and slightly less obvious.

“Hotel Is Currently Closed.”

There are 200-plus families, he begins, and more than 500 people currently living at the (facility).

It’s not only a roof over their heads and three squares a day, but “free” diapers, wipes, toiletries, free tablets and phones, free English lessons, state case workers making sure all entitlements are taken, free Uber and Lyft rides, free bus passes from (redacted).

All with no end in sight.

All are going to the (redacted) immigration office in Ubers… round trip is more than $130 per trip.

All get DTA (Department of Transitional Assistance, i.e., welfare) benefits, EBT cards. They have more expendable cash than I do.

If DCF (Department of Children & Families) says they need a crib, stroller, toys, etc., management is required order them. Everything is new and arrives the next day from Amazon.

They all have MassHealth, free legal services, free tax-filing services.

Most now have Social Security cards and many are getting work permits, as many have been in the “shelter” for months.

Colorado introduces ‘pet tax’ and it’s worse than you think.

Purposed Tax, what is the mindset of anyone that would suggest this?

Colorado House Bill 24-1163 enters a new level of big government and big taxes. The bill will add a new tax of up to $8.50 (but actually up to $25) on EACH pet and it includes ALL animals, even invertebrates. The tax is paid every year. It also requires every pet to be registered with the State and assigned a “designated caregiver.” If you do not name a “designated caregiver,” the cost for each pet is $25 annually. There is no cap or per household type of maximum taxation. This will also be in addition to any local taxes (like dog licenses).
