Today’s temperature is forecast to be MUCH COOLER than yesterday.

Solar Cycle 24 was the most recent solar cycle, the 24th since 1755, when extensive recording of solar sunspot activity began.[1][2] It began in December 2008 with a smoothed minimum sunspot number of 2.2.[3][failed verification] Activity was minimal until early 2010.[4][5] It reached its maximum in April 2014 with a 23 months smoothed sunspot number of 81.8.[6] This maximum value was substantially lower than other recent solar cycles, down to a level which had not been seen since cycles 12 to 15 (1878-1923).

This is Cycle 25.  It has been 486 days since a sunspot was observed.

Cruise industry circling the drain.

With the cruise industry on life support, fleets have put to sea for an indefinite stay with many of their crewmen trapped on board.

Although there are no passengers aboard these ships, some of which cost well over a billion dollars to build, there are plenty of people still on board. Much of their crews are literally trapped on these vessels. As the world cut back travel due to COVID-19’s explosive spread around the globe and cruise ships became very unwanted guests at long-established ports of call, cruise line workers were trapped at their floating workplaces far from home.

Many of the countries they hail from are not wealthy enough to repatriate them even if they could, so for now, they are stuck in a hellish paradise of sorts on gargantuan pleasure boats that have been banished to the sea—barely moving islands onto themselves.

..

So, as you can see, the viability of the cruise industry and the massive ships—big moneymakers during the best of times, but huge money pits when cruisers are not on board—is far from certain. It is hard to imagine what would happen to all of these ships, some of which are modern marvels, if they simply had no demand for their services on the horizon. Few industries exist where such huge capital outlays can turn into equally large liabilities under these highly unique circumstances. Whereas air travel and hotels, both industries that are in great jeopardy, still serve a necessary service during a pandemic and during the economic recovery that hopefully follows, these decadent and hulking ships serve no purpose other than entertainment.

So, unless the COVID-19 situation takes a miraculous turn for the better, it’s hard to imagine a set of circumstances where throngs of cruise ships aren’t left out to sea.

The Disney Wonder cruise ship, right, sits at anchor in front of Celebrity Cruise’s Millennium cruise ship, as people pass on the beach Thursday, April 30, 2020, in Coronado, Calif. The ships are just two of many cruise ships sitting idle along the country’s coastline, as the travel industry feels the effects of the battle to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.

JUSTICE DROPS FLYNN CASE
Government Not Persuaded That Flynn Interview Was “Conducted With a Legitimate Investigative Basis”

—Ace

“The United States of America hereby moves to dismiss with prejudice the criminal information filed against Michael T Flynn pursuant to federal rule of criminal procedure 48(a)…”

Dismissed WITH PREJUDICE means it’s over, General Flynn cannot be re-tried or harassed again.

Time to appoint General Flynn head of the DOJ.  DO IT! Mr. President.

Travel From New York City Seeded Wave of U.S. Outbreaks

The coronavirus outbreak in New York City became the primary source of infections around the United States, researchers have found.

@brithume

So will Andrew Cuomo, with much to answer for because of his disastrous nursing home policy, now be held to account for this? One thing is certain, if the spread from NY could be blamed on POTUS, it would be. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/07/us/new-york-city-coronavirus-outbreak.html

And just like that, “Listen to the Science” became racist!

Quote of the Day: Winnie gets it.

The COVID-19 pandemic morphed into a major geopolitical event and, therefore, the tools of geopolitical analysis became ever more relevant. That is likely why Winston Churchill famously said, “Scientists should be on tap, but not on top.”

Speakeasy.

Tonight’s Doordash report:

The lockdown is over, regardless of what anyone in government says.

While sitting in a strip mall parking lot waiting for an order, I saw a woman exit a chiropractor’s office and walk to her car, parked next to a bunch of restaurant employee’s cars.

A few minutes later, another car parked in the same area, and a woman walked up to the door of the office, which was opened before she could touch it.

The blinds were pulled all the way down on a cloudy day.

I reached out to an old friend who used to cut my hair, and she says that she has more business than she can handle. Not hopeful, but governments need to figure out just how limited their power is.

Yep, Cutting out the tax

rbj • 22 minutes ago

We can do at least some of the same services and not involve the government and the tax man?

Obviousfakename • 8 minutes ago

Just how does one go about finding an illegal hair cutter? Asking for a friend.

Call your regular barber and ask to make an appointment. If there’s an answering machine, leave a message.

Notes from UPS.

From an anonymous UPS delivery driver…

5 types of customers since the “rona”:

1) Steve:

He has been waiting for this moment his whole life. He has been drinking boilermakers since 10:00 am in his recliner and his AR is within arms reach. He has 6 months provisions in the basement and a bug out bag due west buried in the woods. Steve demands a handshake as I give him his package. He’s sizing me up as I deliver his ammo.

Steve will survive this, and he will kill you if he needs to.

2) Brad:

He is standing at his window wearing skinny jeans and a Patagonia t-shirt. He is mad because there were no organic tomatoes at Whole Foods today. He points at the ground where he has taped a 6 ft no go zone line from his porch. I leave his case of Fuji water, organic granola bites, and his new “Bernie Bro” hat at the tape.

Brad will not survive.
Steve will probably eat him.

3) Nancy:

She has sprayed everything with Thieves oil. Bought all the Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, meat, and bread from the local grocery chain. She has quarantined her kids and sprays them with a mixture of thieves, lavender, & mint essential oils daily. She has posted every link known to man about “The Rona” on her social media. She will spray you if you break the 6 ft rule. I will leave her yet another case of toilet paper.

She will last longer than Brad, but not Steve.

4) Karen:

She has called everybody and read them the latest news on “The Rona”. She asked for the manager at Food Lion, Walmart, Publix, McDonalds, Chik-Fil-A, and Vons all before noon demanding more toilet paper. Karen’s kids are currently faking “The Rona” to avoid her. I’m delivering “Hello kitchen” to her.

Karen will not survive longer than Brad.

5) Mary:

Is sitting in the swing watching her kids have a water balloon fight in the front yard as she is on her fourth glass of wine. She went to the store and bought 2 cases of pop tarts, 6 boxes of cereal, 8 bags of pizza rolls, And a 6 roll pack of toilet paper. There is a playlist of Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, and Post Malone playing in the background. I’m bringing her second shipment of 15 bottles of wine in 3 days.

Mary will survive and marry Steve.
Together they will repopulate the earth.

May God have mercy on us all.

Stormtroopers.

CALGARY — An employee at a Star Wars-themed restaurant had a memorable May the Fourth, after her costumed celebration and replica weapon drew the attention of police and ended with her nose bloodied. Now, the chief of police is calling for an investigation into the actions of the responding officers after video of the arrest surfaced.

Now you know the difference between Fake Stormtroopers and Real Stormtroopers.
