Heinlein

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man.
Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded -- here and there, now and then -- are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as "bad luck." -- Robert A. The Mr. Big Head story.
I was recently reminded that I do have a Big Head. Hat size , extra large. Face-Mask oversized please.
Many years ago I was in an department store within the Maine Outlet Mall waiting for the ladies to finish shopping; as I waiting another female shopper came up to me and spoke to me. “Excuse me sir, but I noticed that you have a big head, and my husband has a big head and so I think that if this hat will fit you it will fit him. Would you mind trying it on for me?”
I think I blinked a couple of times while listening to her, but without comment I took the proffered headgear and placed it on my head where it perched precariously. Unable to cover the sides and slide down on to my noggin properly. “No” she said, “definitely not”. “Thank You”, she said and left.
I turned and spoke to my mother and my wife who had witnessed the exchange; I was amused and said, “Can you believe what that lady said?”? Which I quickly learned was the wrong thing to say.
For right there, in the store surrounded by dozens of amused women, my mother orated; “Don’t have to tell ME you have a big head, TEN stitches I had to have when I had YOU”!
Well, I guess you can’t actually die of embarrassment, but I think my wife came perilously close to dying of laughter. In fact all the women nearby found it very funny. From that day forth my wife loved to call me Mr. Big Head when she wanted to get my goat.
Hate the masks, Love the message.
Living in a state that has threatened to fine anyone outside without a (useless) face mask, I thought that at least I could do a little politicking.
I’m not angry, my ears hurt. On me the masks are too small and the elastic bands are pulling my ears out.
Would probably fit most other people, I have a famously Big Head.

Thank You, Trial Lawyers, For Protecting Us from the Scourge of Baby Powder
Scientists say that talcum baby powder doesn’t cause cancer. Trial lawyers say it does. As usual, the lawyers win. Scientists, common sense, and Americans lose.
Johnson & Johnson has announced that it will stop selling talcum baby powder in the United States and Canada. Why? Because of predatory trial lawyers who enrich themselves by lying about science.
Talcum powder is absorptive, so it’s mainly used to help keep otherwise moist body parts dry. (You can use your imagination here, but this SNL skit provides a hint.) For years, there have been rumblings that talcum powder is linked to ovarian cancer. But just like the fictitious link between hexavalent chromium in drinking water and cancer popularized by the movie Erin Brockovich, the link between talcum powder and cancer is basically anecdotal.
A new review published in January 2020 by JAMA Oncology concluded that “there was not a statistically significant association between use of powder in the genital area and incident ovarian cancer.” Though the report cautions that there still could be a tiny causal effect that is too small to be detected, the sample size was large (more than 250,000 women observed over a total of 3.8 million person-years). This indicates that the conclusion of no causal effect is probably correct.
The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) touted the results on its website, proclaiming, “‘No evidence’ that talcum powder causes ovarian cancer new review finds.” But for reasons that I will never understand, American websites remain wishy-washy. The American Cancer Society, for instance, says that the evidence is “less clear.”
That is a travesty. Trial lawyers looking to make a buck (or, in this case, billions of bucks) use scientific uncertainty to score jackpot lawsuits. In situations like this, the scientific community must speak loudly and clearly: “No. Baby powder does not cause cancer. End of story.”
But American health officials seem reluctant to do this (maybe because they’re also afraid of getting sued?). Whatever the reason, I previously concluded that “health authorities in the United Kingdom are much more willing to tell people the cold, hard truth, as compared to their American counterparts.” Baby powder is simply the latest example (alongside vaping, “three-parent” embryos, and alternative medicine).
Once again, it’s sort of pathetic that we have to rely on British scientists and medical doctors to defend American companies. What’s the point of organizations like the FDA if they sit on the sideline while American companies are subjected to blatant highway robbery by unscrupulous lawyers?
As usual, the lawyers win. They always win. And because Johnson & Johnson will continue selling baby powder in the UK and everywhere else, the rest of the world wins. But science, common sense, and American consumers lose.

Lost Graves. Reposted.
A Find A Grave photo request has just been made in your area. If you are able to take this photograph, please read the ‘Instructions for Photographers’ paragraph at the end of this email.
Name: Edmond J Harvey (unknown – Jan. 14, 1945)
Several years ago, after receiving this email, I set out to photograph this man’s resting place. Shortly afterwards I sent this email back.
“I’ve just received the location information about this grave.
Returning veterans bodies whose families could not afford a grave-site were buried in the veterans section (2). Within the cemetery that is between Immaculate Conception Ave. and St. Francis Ave., beyond that there was no record of the row or plot as the men were buried as they came back. “
Section two was about two acres, I came to find that the majority of the WWII graves had only a flat, 12″x5″ rectangular stone marker with Name, Date and Unit. I walked every inch of that section, but I never found “Edmond J Harvey”. I did find a number of stone markers after going to unmarked areas when the spacing should have had a grave and dug around under the sod until I found the buried markers. By rain and snow and growing grass did disappear the markers of forgotten men, those whose families had moved away or never thought to maintain their resting place.
The next Memorial Day (aka Decoration Day), overcast and rainy, I rather self-consciously walked to the middle of the field in an area without visible markers or headstones, and placed a small batch of flowers alone on the wet ground. Edmond J Harvey is there, somewhere, and on each Memorial Day since as I go by that place I think about him and whisper a short prayer. For all the forgotten men.

Last thoughts on Memorial Day. Reposted.

Jenn Budenz lies on a blanket with her 2-month-old son, AJ, as they visit the grave of Maj. Andrew Budenz at Miramar National Cemetery on May 22, 2014, in San Diego. (Hayne Palmour IV/San Diego Union-Tribune)
There’s a difference:
Armed Forces Day (3rd Sat. of May)
For those who currently wear the uniform.
Veterans Day (Nov. 11th)
For those who used to wear the uniform.
Memorial Day (last Monday of May)
For those who never made it out of uniform.

Best headline of the year so far.
We Should Have Funded Research On Coronaviruses, Instead Of Climate Change Musicals
Research funding in the geosciences, including climate change, is certainly legitimate, but not when it goes to ludicrous boondoggles such as a climate-change musical that cost $697,177 to produce.
The primary culprit is the NSF’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences. Underlying its ability to dispense grants is the wrongheaded notion that social-science projects such as a study of animal depictions in National Geographic and a climate change musical are as important as research to identify early markers for Alzheimer’s disease or pancreatic cancer – or the biology and epidemiology of coronaviruses. This is what happens when, as a former senior NSF official put it, “the inmates run the asylum.”
