During the upcoming 2012-13 winter season The Weather Channel will name noteworthy winter storms. Our goal is to better communicate the threat and the timing of the significant impacts that accompany these events. The fact is, a storm with a name is easier to follow, which will mean fewer surprises and more preparation.

The Weather Channel is the first media outlet to cave to the demands of the Winter Storm Community. Frosty the Snowperson, spokesperson for the WSC, read the following statement, “For too long, our community has been ignored and belittled. While Hurricanes are lionized and touted with words like powerful and dangerous, the hard working winter storms are belittled with epitaphs such as; slushy, inconvenient and drizzle! We have even been denied a name!
With the 2013 winter season, this inequity has been addressed. We all expect that Winter Storm Nemo will proudly enter the record books as grave a menace to life and property as any Hurricane.
