I told Doug that I could recommend reading,On Sheep, Wolves and Sheepdogs , but I didn’t think now would be a good time to post about it on this blog. Now I think I was wrong.
This is what changed my mind. “Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but the sheepdog lives for that day. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, most of the sheep, that is, most citizens in America said, “Thank God I wasn’t on one of those planes.” The sheepdogs, the warriors, said, “Dear God, I wish I could have been on one of those planes. Maybe I could have made a difference.”…
” If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen: a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath–a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? Then you are a sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed.
What truly horrible media coverage of the tragedy in Newtown CT. Beyond what I expected and I expected bad. Have any of the network news-dogs ever had a original thought? How can it be that none of them have thought about the remarkable coincidence that another gun-free zone or building is targeted, that the shooter is again a mentally ill person with illegally obtained guns. That there were no legally carrying adults in the building because they weren’t allowed to be there.
If most of the adults within were women, then the only remedy that would make them equal to a armed intruder, of any size or gender, was to be armed or have access to arms themselves. But access to a weapon is not enough by itself. The person would have to be at least a bit of a “Sheepdog” themselves. That’s the problem with “progressively” disarming the populace so now most of its citizens walking around are unarmed and without access to a weapon. Out of the gun toting population many will only use their weapon to protect themselves and their family (Nothing wrong with that), only a few will bring their weapon to engage another human being in defense of someone else.
What the Massacre in Sandy Hook Proves, and What Needs to Be Done
The very existence of any person so defective, so angry, and so perverse as to choose … self destruction is enormously unlikely. Someone of this sort comes along only exceedingly rarely, even in a population of 300 million. But the combination … with an active animus against small children is orders of magnitude even more unlikely. With the death of Adam Lanza, chances are pretty good that this particular rare and hyper-exotic population is extinct.
Yes, there will be more shootings. There were already this week. But to target children, first-graders only six or seven years old? To blast their bodies apart with a high-powered rifle? No, this monster was unique.
…planning and regulation can assuredly avert any possibility of the perverse operation of Fate. All undesirable and untoward events can be planned and regulated out of human existence. All we have to do is give our elite class of experts and government more power, and then we will perfectly safe.
Now, that scares me.
How about we eliminate all “Gun-Free Zones”. Offer training and extra pay to the people who are going to be in that schoolhouse (anyway) to carry a weapon on campus.
And stop going crazy about law abiding Americans owning, carrying and using guns. They are not the problem. Video games based on “scoring points” for shooting realistic images of Whites, Blacks, Women, Cops and even Kids may not be the problem either, or maybe they are. I’d start there first.
