Brilliant Marketing gimmick, Amazon Drone.

AMAZON PRIME AIR PIC 2I admit, I thought this was just a off-hand, stupid remark by Jeff Bezos.

Now I’ve realized that this is a brilliant marketing ploy. Just before Christmas and every paper and TV station has carried this story.  The late night comedians will keep it alive with jokes (that almost write themselves) and skits. If there isn’t at least one skit with Amazon package drones buzzing Santa’s sleigh, I’ll eat my hat.  Yes, Amazon’s name will be on the front page and the TV, blogs and tweeter feeds constantly in the weeks before Christmas.  And it won’t cost Bezos a dime. Brilliant!

I’m equally sure that Amazon has zero intention of actually doing anything like this outside of their own warehouses (inside a warehouse might actually work and be a good idea).  Seriously, would you use a $50,000 drone to deliver one package at a time, at the top speed of 20mph? Passing over the houses, cars and heads of the most litigious people on earth?  Who own shotguns.

My friends with UPS who drive the big brown trucks, you have nothing to fear.

Just found this story on Business Insider:

The Real Reason Amazon Announced Delivery Drones Last Night: $3 Million In Free Advertising On Cyber Monday

I agree, but it’s pretty damn funny anyway.

Bad Photoshop, not my work, I’d do better than that.

I hacked up a hairball and it looked like Obamacare.

No security ever built into Obamacare site: Hacker

It could take a year to secure the risk of “high exposures” of personal information on the federal Obamacare online exchange, a cybersecurity expert told CNBC on Monday.

“When you develop a website, you develop it with security in mind. And it doesn’t appear to have happened this time,” said David Kennedy, a so-called “white hat” hacker who tests online security by breaching websites. He testified on Capitol Hill about the flaws of HealthCare.gov last week.

“It’s really hard to go back and fix the security around it because security wasn’t built into it,” said Kennedy, chief executive of TrustedSec. “We’re talking multiple months to over a year to at least address some of the critical-to-high exposures on the website itself.”

From the comments at the story site, better than the story itself;

Hello, my name is Ubanguto Papaue. I am from Nigeria. My uncle was the leader of a top Nigerian Hospital who was killed in a medical takeover. Fortunately, he left a substantial amount of health credits in his account which I am willing to transfer into your Obama Care account. This is very urgent as I can hear the rebel gunfire outside of the capitol even now. If you provide me with your pets name (no need to provide your Obama Care username/password) I can gather the rest of your personal information easily from the unsecured Obama Care site. I will gather your financial history, health history, social security information, stool sample data, and more. After gathering this data I will transfer my uncle’s health credits into your Obama Care account saving you a tremendous amount of money. I would estimate that your premiums would only go up say 400% rather than the average 700% with the deposit of these health credits. I am sorry to have to write to you this way but I was given your email from a mutual friend at the American consulate.

More on the Stalin-like purges of the US Military.

No, it’s not just the nutjob sites that are becoming alarmed about the Obama actions since taking office to purge the American military of anyone not “On Obama’s Team”.

The Washington Times:

GORDON: Purging America’s military

What in the world is happening to senior military officers under the Obama administration?

It seems that every week since President Obama took office in 2009, we’ve been hearing that another top leader has been summarily fired, despite his decades of loyal service and valuable experience in protecting the nation. Statistically speaking, it’s actually closer to one every 8.8 days, a staggering 200 military brass shown the door in less than five years.

Catholic Online:

Top general: Obama purging military, giving medals for not shooting

Mark Levin:

IBD Editorial:

Obama’s Curious Purge Of The Military Continues

Defense: The firing of two nuclear commanders in a week adds to a body count that suggests we have either the most corrupt and incompetent general staff in history or our military is being reshaped for other purposes.

The Obama administration, which has fired no one over scandals such as its Fast and Furious Mexican gun-running operation, its criminal negligence in the terrorist attack on our Benghazi diplomatic mission, or the use of the IRS to target and intimidate political foes, seems to have a curious obsession lately about ethics and competence in the U.S. military.

Fox News:

General Jack Keane On What’s Behind The Purge Of Military Leaders

What the Hell is wrong with Congress?  They must know what’s going on, why aren’t they doing anything about it, Hell, why aren’t they SAYING ANYTHING ABOUT IT?

Doug: What the Hell is going on? (Military being purged by Obama)

(Hundreds of General Officers fired or forced to resign, leadership decimated, full listing of names included.)

From: Victor Juhan Rannik

Look up the service records of some of these guys. MOST have perfect LONG services, highly decorated.
I believe only 2 Generals were fired under Bush’s 2 terms total.   There are currently 48 4-Star Generals. [link to en.wikipedia.org]
Many of these below have spotless records, 25 and up years service, many medals and honors such as Brig. Gen Bryan W. Wampler and Command Sgt. Major Don B. Jordan.

Damn well betcha that Amazon practices a little “profiling” of which neighborhoods they try this in!

Amazon testing deliveries by drone

Published December 02, 2013

AMAZON PRIME AIR PIC 2

Online retailer Amazon announced Sunday that it is planning a new delivery service in which products would be delivered with the use of unmanned drones.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the so-called “Octocopters” in an interview that aired Sunday on CBS “60 Minutes,” and claimed that the drones would not be ready to take flight for another four or five years. However, after the interview aired, Amazon released a statement promising that “Prime Air vehicles will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road today.”

“I know this looks like science fiction. It’s not,” Bezos said in the CBS interview with Charlie Rose. “It drops the package. You come and get your package and we can do half-hour deliveries.”

Federal Aviation Administration regulations currently prohibit the kind of flights Bezos proposes that Prime Air octocopters undertake. However, rule changes could come as early as 2015.

Bezos said that the vehicles currently being tested have a range of ten miles and can carry products under five pounds, which he estimates make up 86 percent of Amazon’s inventory.

In urban areas, you could actually cover very significant portions of the population,” Bezos said.  “This is all electric, it’s very green, it’s better than driving trucks around.”

The CEO also admitted that the drones required more safety testing, noting “This thing can’t land on somebody’s head while they’re walking around their neighborhood.”

OOPS!

PSA# 7: Puppycide

Every 98 minutes, a dog is shot by law enforcement. Help us tell their stories.

Kickstarter is an ALL-or-NOTHING model. If we don’t reach our goal everyone is refunded and the project gets nothing. PLEASE help us meet our goal by clicking the green “Back this Project” button!

PUPPYCIDE will be a documentary that takes a journey with victims of puppycide, the dogs and their owners. From the moment they meet and seal their emotional bonds to the excruciating trauma of loss, we follow the dog owners’ battles for justice with police culture and the legal system, both of which treat puppycides as acceptable collateral damage.

With your help, this film will examine why puppycides are increasing, why they are so devastating, and the tools available to prevent them

Obama: I’ve got ‘nowhere to go but up’, Yeah, up the long ladder…

Expanding on what I said in the comments at InstaPundit:

As pointed out before, the website isn’t the issue. That’s like complaining about the style of music playing on the radio of the car that ran you down.

It’s the ACA, the law (of the land), that has been and will always be the problem.

By focusing on the website (which if they throw enough money at it will improve) will de-emphasize the problem of tens of millions of families that have lost and will continue to lose their existing healthcare.
After the example of the recent shutdown, it’s “Oh! Look! The website is broken!“, not that the next time this vandal will be able to shut down one sixth of the American Economy if his demands are not met, instead of a few parks.
So six people only, all government employees, signed up. Oh My God!    And to Hell with the fact that all this private information and access to every last dollar in every single bank account will be in the hands of Barak Obama’s IRS.

The website will work someday (billions of dollars from now) and that is not a good thing.

“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings.” (1.2.147-48).

I was searching for different quote about Julius Caesar when I came upon that quote.  The literary interpretation attached said Cassius was explaining to Brutus that fate didn’t put Caesar above them, they did it to themselves by being afraid to stand up for themselves.   Well, Will. You get it and put it neatly down in a few well chosen and immortal words.  Barak Obama is no genius, far from it. I’m willing to bet that Hitler could beat him at chess very easily.  Yet he has, in a few years destroyed generations of wealth, and American expectations of free choice in the course of their lives.

He did not do it with brilliance, in fact all his works show the same sloppy hand and careless arrogance. I believe that when the history of this time is written the role of malevolent geniuses will be assigned to Reid, Pelosi and Soros.  But the true villains will be the fools who because of sloth, greed or indifference struggled weakly if at all against the new Regime.  I’m talking about you Boehner! For John McCain I don’t have sufficient words to express my disdain.

Trust is a funny thing.

An example of why there will never be 100% trust in the Internet.  The thought I had is in regard to clickable agreements on commerce websites. Web-bots are constantly collecting and archiving web pages, that is probably how Techdirt.com determined that the NDC was not part of the KlearGear purchase engine at the time that Mr. Palmer completed the disputed transaction.

But legally where does the law stand when there is no hard copy put in the hands of both parties at the time of the sale. And when the record of the transaction plus any restrictive or binding agreements exist only on the server belonging to the Web company.

The KlearGear Controversy

I haven’t had a chance to blog about the case, but I thought I’d note that Public Citizen has gotten involved. Here’s the press release:

Public Citizen Asks Online Retailer KlearGear.com To Remedy Its Retaliation Against Customer for Critical Online Review

Company Damaged Customer’s Credit After He Refused Company’s Demand for $3,500 Over Critical Web Posting

Online merchant KlearGear.com must retract its reports to consumer credit agencies concerning a phony $3,500 debt it has sought from customer John Palmer since late spring of 2012, Public Citizen wrote the company today in a demand letter.
